Communications Director



Introduction: Fund MI Future is a 501c3 collective impact strategy coalition of nonpartisan community organizations, unions of working people, and policy experts working to create shared prosperity for all Michiganders by fully and fairly funding our public services like schools, roads, and clean water.

The Communications Director will be responsible for working closely with the Co-Chairs of the Revenue Table and consulting teams to develop and implement a strategic communications plan; engage with the press as a spokesperson; write editorials, columns and organic content; and develop written communications and manage social media platforms for the Fund MI Future coalition.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop and execute an overall communication strategy for Fund MI Future
  • Draft timely written materials, such as press releases, op-eds, speeches, and letters to the editor
  • Develop relationships with state press corps as well as local press outlets and reporters
  • Proactively seek news opportunities and creative placement strategies as part of short- and long-term planning
  • Assist in the development and implementation of earned media plans, building media events and garnering significant press coverage
  • Identify and execute-response opportunities and press conferences for media engagement
  • Serve as a press spokesperson for Fund MI Future and schedule/train relevant staff and partners for news interviews
  • Manage Fund MI Future’s digital media presence, including the website, email list/campaigns, podcast, newsletters and social media accounts
  • Develop messaging materials for staff and coalition partners, including message boxes, message triangles, and talking points
  • Participate in communications tables meetings with fellow labor and progressive communicators to coordinate issue-based messaging and strategy around progressive tax policy
  • Partner with communications teams across the coalition to bring progressive tax policy to life for the press

Education, Experience and Skills:

  • A bachelor’s degree is required in public relations, marketing, journalism, english, creative writing, public policy, or a closely related field, or a commensurate combination of education and experience
  • Strong writing and verbal skills
  • Preferred experience of five years or two election cycles worth of experience working in political communications
  • On-the-record experience with print, radio, and TV news reporters
  • Existing relationships with Michigan press and reporters
  • Understanding and experience working with the labor movement and progressive coalitions
  • Experience in branding and marketing is a plus
  • Graphic design and/or video production experience is a plus
  • Familiarity with WordPress is a plus

Other Requirements:
Work is generally remote, however some travel may be required. The applicant must be willing to work in a fast-paced environment. Periodically, long work hours are required.

Compensation: Salary and benefits range from $70,000 – $80,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
