The Chicago and Midwest Region Joint Board of Worker’s United is looking for you to join our team! This is an External Organizing position, in one of the most critical service industry campaigns in our lifetime. While the current campaign focuses on the service industry there is the potential to work in various other fields. CMRJB (Chicago and Midwest Regional Joint Board) staff organizers work with a team of organizers from 13 states across the Midwest. Most of the time in this role is spent working directly with workers organizing their shops. Are you ready to change the labor movement?

Responsibilities Include:

  • Building relationships with workers. Able to identify, recruit, and effectively assess and develop leaders Build and maintain worker committees
  • Lead 1-on-1 and group organizing conversations. Organize and lead worker committee meeting
  • Educating workers on the benefits of unionization and training workers in skills needed to win campaigns. Running union elections and first-contract campaigns.
  • Help to organize and run large actions such as picket lines and rallies
  • Write leaflets and other materials for organizing campaigns and media correspondence (design skills are a plus)
  • Ability to work under pressure in a very high-paced environment with flexibility and ease
  • Coordinate city, state, local, and national working groups.
  • Ability to prioritize, organize and coordinate multiple tasks under changing deadlines
  • Perform administrative tasks such as maintaining databases and filing expense reports
  • Travel to workplace locations to assist workers in their organizing efforts (out-of-state travel is required)

Desired Qualifications:

  1. 1-2 years of organizing experience, particularly in building worker power within a diverse group
  2. Basic knowledge of union organizing practices and principles
  3. Be able to follow directions and stay on message
  4. Must have a valid driver’s license and own a car
  5. Ability to plan, execute, and promote actions and events
  6. Excellent communication skills
  7. Willing and able to travel and work long and irregular work hours, including nights and weekends
  8. Spanish language proficiency is a plus
  9. Dedication to the labor movement
