Deputy Director of Field Mobilization
Campaigns Department

The Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) is currently accepting applications for the position of Deputy Director of Field Mobilization in the ATU Campaigns Department to begin immediately. The ATU is the largest union representing transit workers in the United States and Canada. Founded in 1892, the ATU is comprised of more than 200,000 members, including: metropolitan, interstate, and school bus drivers; paratransit, light rail, subway, streetcar, and ferry boat operators; mechanics and other maintenance workers; station agents, clerks, baggage handlers, municipal employees and others. The ATU has more than 240 constituent Locals in 44 U.S. states, the District of Columbia and nine (9) Canadian provinces.

Description:
Under the direction of the International President and Campaigns Department Director, the Deputy Director of Field Mobilization is responsible for the development and management of all internal organizing and mobilization campaigns, and manages a team of organizers and senior organizers.

The Amalgamated Transit Union conducts field mobilization campaigns at the international, national, regional, state, and local levels; and also through the Joint Industry Councils and joint bargaining councils. Thus, the Deputy Director of Field Mobilization works closely with other International Union officers, Local Union officers, ATU conference and council leadership, and rank-and-file ATU members.

As these campaigns frequently require close coordination with labor and community allies, the Deputy Director of Field Mobilization shares responsibility with the Director of Government Affairs in building, maintaining, and activating national coalition partnerships.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Developing effective mobilization and new organizing strategies to protect the integrity of public transit systems and improve the livelihoods of transit workers
  • Overseeing development of field campaign plans, including conducting power analyses, setting goals, identifying effective tactics, and developing staffing models and budgets
  • Managing overall field operations, including monitoring active campaigns, developing offensive campaigns, supporting and holding accountable field staff, and reviewing and approving organizer-developed campaign plans and reviews
  • Coordinating campaign-related activities across departments to ensure effective and efficient deployment of union resources
  • Managing, developing, and training ATU International organizers and, when necessary, Local Union lost-time organizers
  • Working with the International President and Director of Campaigns Department to create national and international campaign priorities
  • In conjunction with the Director of Campaigns Department, briefing the International President and other department directors on a regular basis to avoid missed opportunities and ensure consistency in field campaigns
  • Assisting the Communications Department with messaging, materialist development, public relations, and internal reporting on field campaigns
  • Building and maintaining coalition partnerships at the national level
  • Other duties as assigned

Applicants Must Have:

  • At least 7 years of experience in external and internal union campaigns
  • A demonstrated commitment to trade unionism, social and economic justice and equity
  • The ability to inspire and motivate others to action
  • The ability to respectfully work with relate to people from diverse cultural backgrounds and cultures
  • Ability to work under pressure, independently, with limited supervision, in unfamiliar environments
  • A valid driver’s license and the willingness to travel frequently and on short notice
  • Proficiency in using MS Word, Excel, Outlook, Google Docs/Sheets, etc.
  • Willingness to work non-traditional hours with flexibility

Top Applicants will also have:

  • Experience supervising 3-5 staff organizers
  • Experience with digital organizing campaigns
  • Proficiency in a language other than English, especially Spanish or Amharic
  • Familiarity with mass transit, health and safety, or relevant fields

Location:
The Deputy Director of Field Mobilization will work out of the ATU’s headquarters office at 10000 New Hampshire Avenue, Silver Spring, Maryland.

Compensation:
Salary will be between $105,000 and $130,000. The ATU provides a generous benefits program including medical, dental, vision and life insurance with no employee premiums; a defined-benefit pension plan with no employee contributions; a 401(k) savings plan; and paid vacation and sick leave.
