Political Coordinator

Position will be based in one of SEIU Texas’ three offices:
Houston, El Paso, or Corpus Christi, TX

 

SEIU Texas, an affiliate of the 2 million member strong Service Employees International Union, unites more than 6,000 healthcare workers, janitors, security officers and airport workers in Corpus Christi, El Paso, and Houston who have secured better wages, benefits, and working conditions through their union. Airport workers in Houston just won $15/hour and airport workers in Dallas are beginning to organize. We believe this is just the beginning of the explosive growth of workers organizing in Texas.

We believe deeply in developing member leaders who challenge corporate power and hold all of our elected officials accountable to the needs of all workers no matter their race or their country of origin.

We are committed to expanding access to union jobs for all Texans— and we are actively organizing subcontracted passenger service workers at Houston and Dallas airports into their union. The Political Coordinator reports to the Political Director and works closely with the organizing team and local labor allies. The political Coordinator is responsible for aspects of the Union’s legislative, political and allies work as well as supporting the organizing campaign. The position may include travel at times.

Responsibilities:

  • Monitor and coordinate aspects of legislative and policy reform initiatives that effect the Union, worker’s rights and social justice.
  • Work with the Political Director and local partners on strategic campaigns.
  • Plan and implement an electoral program for local, state and federal elections.
  • Oversee and carry out regional activity for federal legislative campaigns.
  • Plan and coordinate political field activities, lobby visits, phone banking and events for our public policy campaigns at the county, state and federal level;
  • Mobilize, train and educate new member leaders and activists for legislative and electoral activity.
  • Support contract and organizing campaigns, including rallies, press events and targeted owner activity.
  • Coordinate the Union’s work with local labor and community allies.
  • Follow current events and creates timely, appropriate responses if necessary.

Qualifications:

  • 3 to 5 years of experience coordinating legislative, electoral, or community organizing campaigns.
  • Experience working on electoral campaigns and managing field programs.
  • Ability to design and implement powerful and effective campaign plans.
  • Experience engaging directly impacted people and moving them to take action.
  • Excellent writing, proofreading, and communications skills.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects, coordinating work with others to produce projects on time.
  • Ability to work within timelines under pressure and minimal supervision.
  • Willingness to work long and irregular hours and attend required evening and weekend activities.
  • Fluent written and oral Spanish preferred but not required

Additional Qualifications

  • Must be willing to work periodically long, irregular hours and travel as needed
  • Proof of COVID-19 Vaccination.
  • Driver’s license and reliable car.

Salary & Benefits

  • Salary Range: $60,000-$70,000
  • SEIU Texas offers a competitive benefits package covering 100% of employee medical, dental, & vision insurance premiums, cell phone reimbursement, car and gas reimbursement and a defined benefit pension plan.

Location: This is a full time position based out of SEIU Texas’ offices in Houston, El Paso or Corpus Christi.
