Staff Attorney / Labor Specialist

Based in Washington, DC


A vacancy exists for a Staff Attorney/Labor Specialist with the District of Columbia Nurses Association. DCNA represents approximately 2000 registered nurses and other health care professionals in the DC metropolitan area. DCNA is affiliated with the National Nurses United, AFL-CIO. See www.dcna.org.

Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience.

Some of the duties of the Staff Attorney/Labor Specialist are as follows:

  • Negotiating collective bargaining agreements with DC area employers.
  • Representing local units in court, arbitrations, disciplinary matters, unfair labor practices and other contractual administrative matters.
  • Advising, assisting, training and participating in all aspects of the negotiation and grievance processes.
  • Acting as technical advisor and coordinator to various DCNA and national union bodies.
  • Providing advice, training, coordination and assistance to workers and shop stewards on matters of wages, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
  • Assisting in external and internal organizing campaigns


  • Five or more years of experience in labor relations, with a preference for healthcare labor relations experience and possession of a J.D. and license to practice law.
  • Knowledge of Federal and District of Columbia labor and employment laws.
  • Ability to independently handle difficult and complex issues in labor relations matters.
  • Ability to exercise skills in interpersonal relationships.
  • Ability to work with limited supervision.
