Position - Campaigner in USW Strategic Campaigns department

The United Steelworkers, the nation’s largest industrial Union, seeks innovative and energetic individuals from varying backgrounds who are interested in working on strategic campaigns in a fast-paced environment.

The USW Strategic Campaigns Department is responsible for the development and coordination of membership mobilization programs to support bargaining and strategic initiatives. The campaigns vary – from small scale, local union driven contract campaigns to heavily resourced corporate campaigns at multiple locations across the country.

This position involves:

  • Working with Local Union leaders and members from a range of sectors to develop mobilization campaigns that build solidarity to win fair labor contracts
  • Developing creative campaign strategies and tactics that are responsive to a variety of situations from tough bargaining at a single plant to nation-wide campaigns with multiple local unions at a similar employer
  • Facilitating trainings with union members in various settings
  • Planning and implementing creative tactics ranging from sticker actions inside a workplace to rallies to visibility actions at corporate events
  • Coordinating events and meetings with union members and staff
  • Writing campaign materials, such as flyers, social media posts and campaign updates
  • Basic research into employers and targets to identify campaign leverage
  • Working with local unions during labor disputes (strikes and lockouts) including training, planning and direct support on the picket lines and beyond


  • At least three years of experience within the labor movement and a commitment to fighting for justice for workers
  • Valid driver’s license and willingness to do substantial travel
  • Experience working on campaigns that mobilize people to work together toward a common goal
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented, able to manage and prioritize multiple projects simultaneously, think ahead and meet deadlines
  • Strong communication skills, experience leading or facilitating trainings is a plus
  • Ability to adapt to changing circumstances and work in a fast-paced environment
  • Self-motivated and willing to take initiative
  • Willingness to learn, take direction and work collaboratively within a team
  • Willingness to work long, irregular hours when needed, including weekends and evenings
  • Basic computer skills including familiarity with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) or Google (docs, sheets, slides), virtual meetings (like Zoom) and phone apps for email, calendars and messaging that allow you to work remotely while traveling
  • Proficiency in another language, particularly Spanish, French or Vietnamese, is a plus

Salary - Salary range is $63,000 to $105,000, with placement on the range commensurate with experience and education. This is a bargaining unit position. Generous benefits including health care and retirement benefits provided by employer.

Location – Primarily based in Pittsburgh with frequent travel
