Labor Organizer

Based in Flagstaff, AZ

 

This is a full-time project-based position to work on an organizing campaign in Flagstaff, AZ. The position is overseen by AFT Arizona and reports directly to the President and Executive Board of UUNA-AFT #5196. Organizers are responsible for a variety of aspects of external organizing including building relationships with workers, developing issues-based organizing plans for assigned areas, recruiting and sustaining the motivation of organizing committee members and activists, having 1:1 conversations with potential members to ask them to join their union, and working with the organizing committee to plan and implement member-to-member outreach drives. Union organizing experience preferred.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Dedication to social and economic justice, and to higher education access
  • Possession of an insured vehicle and valid driver’s license
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse population
  • Strong communications skills
  • Competence in basic computer/web functions, and familiarity with common social media platforms
  • Motivated, responsible, organized, professional and detail-oriented
  • Able to work independently while also being able to incorporate constructive feedback and direction from the campaign principals
  • Willingness to work sometimes irregular hours
  • At least 1 year of previous labor and/or community organizing

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A background in higher educational issues and/or prior higher ed employment in any capacity
  • Community, student, or labor activism experience

SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Organize and mobilize workers across all job categories
  • Attend regular meetings with the union Executive Board and president to discuss progress and plan activities
  • Periodic status reports to AFT Arizona leadership
  • Engage in one-on-one visits, site visits, meetings, and other interaction with members and potential members
  • Enter assessments and other data collected in a database on a regular basis
  • Occasionally, be assigned to other parts of the state or country as required
  • Take direction on activities to grow membership and accomplish goals
  • Share observations and insights to help guide organization growth

SALARY AND BENEFITS:
