Senior Organizer for the Americas

Summary
Solidarity Center seeks an experienced union organizer to support its organizing efforts in Brazil and the broader Americas region. This individual is responsible for coordinating organizing programs across the region, including multinational campaigns, training, and general movement-building work. The Senior Organizing Specialist is involved in developing and implementing strategic organizing programs, including international solidarity with partnership from the AFL-CIO, U.S. unions, and the Global Union Federations (GUFs). This individual will identify and implement strategies to provide support and solidarity to unions in the region to advance the global labor movement.

The successful candidate will be experienced in all aspects of union organizing and campaign-building, and will possess a passion for international worker solidarity. The Senior Organizing Specialist must help develop and drive successful organizing and build strong international labor solidarity in the process.

This position will require extensive travel within the region (based on the lifting of pandemic restrictions and confirmation of safe conditions on the ground). The Senior Organizing Specialist may be reassigned to another country in the region as the need for this area of expertise shifts.

Applicants should have extensive experience in union organizing, including developing and winning organizing drives, training organizers, and leading successful contract campaigns.

This position reports to the Trade Union Strengthening Director, based in Washington, DC, who oversees organizing support work globally.

Qualifications

  • Extensive knowledge of union organizing and collective bargaining
  • Extensive previous trade union experience, particularly in leading strategic organizing drives and campaigns
  • Ability to work independently and lead teams of organizers
  • Good communications and writing skills
  • Computer literacy for word processing and simple spreadsheets
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Fluency in Spanish; fluency in Portuguese is preferred, but not required

Specific Duties

  • Support unions and workers in Brazil and the Americas region in their organizing efforts
  • Assess organizing strategy in the region and help develop strategic organizing campaigns that advance the labor movement
  • Train local unions/workers on organizing, comprehensive campaigning, and strategic research
  • Serve as a hub/resource country-specific information on organizing and bargaining
  • Work with local partners to help build coalitions
  • Assist headquarters with arranging in-country visits for U.S. trade union visitors in coordination with the Regional Program Director and Country Program Director
  • Facilitate partnerships between the AFL-CIO and US unions with regional unions as related to organizing, building international solidarity and powerful campaigns
  • Prepare timely, well-written reports in accordance with the deadline schedule
  • Share information on country conditions and labor issues as appropriate

This is a collective bargaining unit position, generously compensated with a gross annual salary starting at approximately $101,186 USD, plus allowances for housing, education, and annual home leave.
