Senior Staff Accountant

Based statewide in California


This position will maintain the general ledger, record monthly accruals, assist in the preparation of the financial statements, prepare budget variance reports, assist the Controller and Accounting Manager on special projects, and post journal entries as needed. This position will be assigned specific general ledger accounts to maintain on a regular basis, the maintenance of which may include roll-forward schedules, bank reconciliations, audit schedules, and senior level account analysis and adjustments. This position may also be responsible for but not limited to exercising timely and accurate control, responsibility, oversight, maintenance, execution and completion of the Union's biweekly payroll

  • Account Analysis
    • Able to determine and clear inappropriate entries
    • Reconciliation of Account to Source /Back-up
    • Journal entries - Re-class, reversals, posting
    • Work papers to track balances forward
  • Audit Support
    • Prepare/Balance accounts for year end, especially salary accounts reconciled to year end 941
    • Prepare audit schedules for auditor's review, especially payroll liabilities posted and relieved
    • Assists in compilation of Auditor's requests
  • Payroll
    • Competence with payroll software.
    • Manages payroll cycle to transmit timely and accurate data to TPA
    • Regular maintenance of payroll personnel files
    • Use of payroll reports to ascertain thoroughness of input prior to processing
  • General
    • Prepare Payroll on time
    • Reconcile balance sheet accounts.
    • Confirm accuracy of period reports
    • Utilize reports to distribute expense to cost center
    • Perform research projects as directed
    • Able to reconcile sub-ledgers to general ledger
    • Reconciliations using sophisticated methodology (e.g., quadrille, book-to-bank, two way)
    • Able to act as back-up (redundancy) for at least one mission critical position
    • Perform other duties as required to support the department and its mission/vision.

Physical Requirements:
Work is generally performed in an office setting. Employees must recognize that working in the labor movement is tough, demanding work, which sometimes requires working long or irregular hours that may necessitate over time. Some travel may be required.

Scope and Nature of Supervision:
This position reports to the Accounting Manager, Controller or designee.
