Executive Director USLPA

The Executive Director is directly responsible for the strategic leadership and direction of the USLPA. This rewarding and impactful leadership position creates, promotes, and executes the Player’s Association’s vision. The incumbent is responsible for providing steadfast leadership in all areas of the Player’s Association, including policy creation, organizational change management, thoughtful staff management, budget analysis and creation, and relationship development within USLPA and with outside organizations.

The Executive Director is the USLPA’s administrative and executive officer. He/She is the chief liaison to the Executive Board. He/She is accountable to the USLPA Board of Directors for communication and execution of USLPA policies as approved by the Board of Directors. The Executive Director also serves as the appointing authority for all USLPA staff.

JOB DUTIES

Strategy and Planning

  • Execute the mission of USLPA to advocate for the players in the USL Championship and USL League One.
  • Work with USLPA leadership and the Board of Directors to develop and maintain a strategic vision and direction for the union.
  • Serve the union as a whole; carry out member policy while operating within a membership-driven environment.
  • Successfully navigate national union trends, local issues, generational challenges, and emerging opportunities to engage members and grow membership.
  • Establish goals, objectives, and operational plans to benefit the members of the USLPA in collaboration with the Board of Directors, elected union officers, committees, and staff.
  • Direct resources and manage all financials in accordance with the budget as well as current laws and regulations; authorize appropriate expenditures and sign financial documents.
  • Cultivate a strong partnership with the Board of Directors and elected officers.
  • Establish Board agendas and an effective communication strategy with the Board.
  • Build advantageous relationships with the USL and its teams to advance the mission of USLPA.
  • Offer ongoing access and allot time to engage with elected officers, Executive Committee members, Board members and/or interested union members. Actively listen, acknowledge concerns, offer honest dialogue, and clarify decisions and goals on behalf of the union.
  • Stay abreast of current technology, social media, data analytics and industry trends. Create effective member centered public relations strategies which leverage membership growth, impact member organizing and advancing the mission of the USLPA.

Organizational & Staff Management

  • Provide steadfast guidance and leadership across the organization for USLPA Staff.
  • Develop an organizational infrastructure which supports and promotes current strategy and goals.
  • Provide overall direction to USLPA staff in carrying out program goals and objectives consistent with the mission and direction established by the Board of Directors.
  • Maintain a work environment which serves the membership while attracting, retaining and motivating a diverse staff of top performing individuals at all levels.
  • Collaborate with the finance team and internal staff to prepare the annual budget for approval by the Board of Directors.
  • Oversee operations, programs, and activities of the USLPA with and adherence to established budget maintaining financial stability
  • Promote professional development and learning of staff members which recognize and build on staff talents to benefit the Union members.
  • Interpret and enforce USLPA policies and procedures to ensure adherence through all employment practices; partner with & advise the Board of Directors to implement policy changes when needed.
  • Manage union resources and technology to maintain efficient and effective union operations and communication for a successful union.
  • Uphold an organizational culture of inclusion of all union members’ views and backgrounds which is free from discrimination or prejudice.
  • Negotiate labor contracts with staff members.
  • Assist various staff with bargaining contracts or other complex issues as necessary.
  • Maintain contacts with CWA leadership and specific department heads, operating as the main contact to CWA.
  • Drive labor relation efforts, clearly and concisely representing the union’s point of view to staff, members, outside organizations and the general public.
  • Serve as USLPA spokesperson to communicate with elected public officials, legislators, agency officials, community groups and the press (media interviews), etc.
  • Other duties related to carrying out the mission and/or policies of USLPA as assigned by the Board of Directors.

Requirements

  • A minimum of three years of progressive experience in leadership, organizing, collective bargaining, politics and/or policy and staff management.
  • Minimally, a bachelor’s degree; master’s or advanced study a plus.
  • Direct & indirect supervision of staff, including regular performance evaluations, discipline, motivating guidance, clear communication of expectations, adherence
  • to staff collective bargaining agreement provisions and maintenance of personnel files.
  • Proven experience serving as a negotiator, offering an adept understanding of the art and science of negotiations, while also working to effectively mentor others.
  • Strong speaking and writing skills.
  • Previous political, legislative, public policy and communications experience.
  • Ability to travel nationally and internationally as needed.
  • In-depth knowledge of financial planning and previous budget management experience.
  • A leadership style which is membership focused, transparent, ethical, and inclusive.
  • Strong understanding of the environment surrounding labor organizations, in particular sports labor organizations.

Knowledge and Abilities

  • Manage diverse tasks effectively while working to ethically address the needs of a wide variety of audiences.
  • A thorough understanding of labor law with an emphasis on collective bargaining and contract administration, organizing, leadership development and training.
  • Work cooperatively and effectively with others to set goals, resolve problems, develop positive relationships, and make decisions to enhance effectiveness,
  • Determine political and legislative strategies to move the union and its members forward by exercising initiative, setting goals, creating, and implementing action plans, and evaluating processes and achieved results.
  • Anticipate, understand, and respond to the needs of the political and sport climate
  • Speak, listen, and write in a clear, thorough, timely manner using effective and persuasive communication tools and techniques.
  • Expert ability to assess options and actions based on union trends, the sport environment, the interests of members and established strategic goals.
  • Knowledge of human resource management, financial management and project management.

Working Conditions
Work is performed in a variety of settings; travel away from home and extended work hours are required, including evenings and weekends. This position requires a valid driver’s license and insurability.
