Who We Are
The Los Angeles College Faculty Guild (AFT 1521) is the exclusive bargaining agent representing over 4,000 full-time and adjunct faculty working in the nine community colleges within the Los Angeles Community College District. The Guild has represented the district's faculty since the beginning of collective bargaining in California's community colleges in 1977 and is the largest local union of community college faculty in California.

Executive Director
The Executive Director provides administrative support to the President by coordinating and supervising daily operations, staff, and services of the AFT 1521 offices. They will perform various tasks that require organization and planning to meet identified deadlines. The position requires interpersonal and organizational skills to coordinate requested information from internal and external sources. The Executive Director must have knowledge of the structure and mission of the American Federation of Teachers.

The Executive Director shall:

  • Develop and implement strategic plans that meet organizational goals and objectives created in partnership with the Executive Board
  • Oversee general office operations
  • Recruit and develop a team of senior leaders to manage critical functions
  • Ensure commitment to and compliance with all applicable laws and regulations across the organization
  • Create a culture of transparency and communication throughout the organization
  • Proactively address challenges in the internal and external environment to protect organizational interests
  • Coordinate organizational appointments and meetings
  • Manage staff and guild officers’ calendars and schedules
  • Supervising, mentoring, training, and coaching our office staff and delegating assignments to ensure maximum productivity
  • Producing reports, composing correspondence, and drafting new contracts
  • Creating presentations and other management-level reports
  • Aid in the development of resource guides (FAQs)
  • Review work activities reports and present summary report to the executive council
  • Work with guild staff and paid accounting professionals to develop guidelines and practices for guild financial operations, such as bookkeeping, accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and expense reimbursement
  • Other duties assigned


  • Advanced level of management experience and demonstrated leadership skills required to manage and develop a team and individual contributors effectively
  • Experience with the governance of an organization, including E-board management and organizational development processes
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills and ability to interact effectively with consultative skills in building impactful solutions
  • Comfortable with technology and learning new programs (i.e., data management, social media)
  • Able to organize, prioritize and coordinate multiple assignments and project
  • Experience working with and/or within labor unions and familiarity with the landscape of the labor movement
  • Experience working with and/or within community-based organizations
  • Strong facilitation skills
  • Ability to bridge diverse individuals to strengthen relationships and connections toward common goals
  • Must be available and willing to work extended hours per day or week, including weekends and holidays, as AFT determines is necessary to meet its operational needs
  • Must be willing to travel as necessary

Minimum Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in a relevant field from an accredited college/university and five years of applicable experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • A minimum of five years of management/supervisory level experience.

Salary range: $92,000 – $110,00 salary range DOE and benefits.
