LEO Business Manager

Based in Ann Arbor, MI

 

The Lecturers’ Employee Organization (LEO), AFT Michigan Local 6244, AFL-CIO, the union representing non-tenure-track faculty at the University of Michigan (UM), is seeking to hire a part-time (60-75% tba) Business Manager for our Ann Arbor office. LEO represents over 2000 non-tenure-track faculty on 3 campuses (Ann Arbor, Dearborn and Flint). After a probationary period of six months, this is an ongoing position reporting to the Union President and Union executive board.

Brief Description of Responsibilities

  • Track dues collection in coordination with AFT, AFT Michigan, and University payroll
  • Issue checks/ pay bills and keep track of union expenses
  • Manage membership data with timely updating of membership rolls
  • Work with Treasurer on monthly financial reports, budgets and banking (including investments)
  • Participate in annual audits
  • Perform HR functions for the Union, such as payroll, benefits, hiring paperwork, etc.
  • Perform general office duties, including purchasing and maintaining equipment and office supplies and coordinating with the Graduate Employees Organization (GEO) in our shared office space, collect and distribute mail, answering telephone and email questions
  • Coordinate efforts to secure venues, food, supplies etc. for LEO events, particularly during bargaining

LEO requires applicants to have:

  • Familiarity with QuickBooks, Excel, Access, and cloud-based data systems
  • Willingness to work with others in the shared office space
  • Willingness to engage member questions and refer to appropriate party
  • Willingness to travel to other UM campuses a few times a year (possibly via carpool)
  • Ability to work independently and reliably
  • Ability to solve problems creatively and cooperatively

LEO prefers applicants to have:

  • Relevant business manager experience
  • Experience with unions, non-profits, or higher education
  • Strong commitment to social justice and the labor movement
  • Experience working with diverse populations

LEO will accept applications through August 31, 2022 and hopes to hire a business manager to start on October 1, 2022. The new hire will overlap with the current business manager for a few months for training purposes. The annual full-time salary is $60,000 – $68,000, prorated to percentage of appointment. Healthcare and competitive benefits, including paid vacations, are provided.
