Tech Organizer

Reports to the New York City office


Position Overview
This is an entry level organizer position. The primary focus of the position is to initiate and conduct new organizing campaigns in the tech sector; to develop workplace leaders; and to increase union visibility and assist with the newly formed OPEIU Tech Workers Union Local 1010. This position is funded for one year, with the possibility of extending if the program is successful. The position reports to the New York office and is targeted for New York City, Washington DC, San Francisco Bay Area, or Austin, TX locations. There may be some flexibility provided the location is within a major travel hub and is in close proximity to active campaign activity.

Primary Responsibilities  

  • Help to identify and develop appropriate new organizing targets and campaign plans, with goals, strategies, and resources needed to execute the plans
  • Conduct and coordinate phone calls, site visits and other 1:1 outreach to build membership, support leaders and further the goals of a campaign
  • Identify and develop new workplace leaders
  • Help develop community among future Local 1010 members
  • Write and produce basic campaign materials
  • Manage lists, database, assessments, charts and other campaign tools
  • Assist with member turnout for events and actions
  • Identify workplace issues and help members organize for solutions and power
  • Submit a detailed report each week demonstrating activities

Job Qualifications and Requirements

  • Demonstrated commitment to the labor movement and social justice
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Competency with Google Drive, Calendar, Slack, and other communication platforms
  • Driver’s license required, with access to reliable transportation
  • Willingness to work evenings, weekends and irregular hours with some travel (once it’s safe to do so)
  • Ability to provide detailed campaign summaries and assessments
  • Ability to establish and maintain credibility with diverse demographic groups
  • A basic understanding of how the collective bargaining process works
  • Work and familiarity in the tech sector is a must

Starting salary is $65,000/year with a generous benefits package.
