Annual Salary: $162,127.71
            
Position Summary: The deputy director will work under the direction of the Senior Director of Organization and Field Services and Deputy Senior Director of Organization and Field Services, as well as in cooperation with other Organizing and Field Services Directors. Responsibilities will generally include developing, trouble shooting and implementing local and state crisis campaign plans, developing and implementing organizing strategies, and other responsibilities as assigned.
            
Position Responsibilities:    

  • Trouble shooting state and local crisis campaigns to improve AFT members working conditions.  
  • Supervise and direct organizing campaigns, collective bargaining campaigns, strikes, contract negotiations, community coalition activities, and other field activities to improve institutions in which AFT members work.
  • Supervise and direct the on-site work of staff, including national representatives.
  • Enhance the skills of affiliate leadership and members and assist state and local affiliates in building capacity in union activity.
  • Oversee relations between the national AFT and AFT state federations and locals in terms of recommendations for national AFT financial aid and other assistance programs across the entire spectrum of AFT’s organizational jurisdiction.
  • Encourage improved relations with AFT state federations and locals to assigned and state and local AFL-CIO central bodies.
  • Work with AFL-CIO department of organization and field services staff in discharging the above responsibilities.            

Primary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:    

  • Substantial experience with and ability to direct union staff, including but not limited to coordination and direction of organizing actions, communications, political action, and labor actions.
  • Experience with multi-prong crisis campaigns.
  • Experience in union activities at various organizational levels.
  • Familiarity with issues facing AFT members.
  • Applicants must have a demonstrated record of excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Proven ability to work in a professional and collegial manner.
  • Willingness to relocate residence if deemed necessary by AFT for effective servicing of assigned area.
  • Knowledge of AFT and familiarity with AFT local and state federation structure is a plus.
  • Prior experience conducting leadership training programs is desirable.           

Work Environment: The work requires extensive out-of-town-travel.
