The private equity industry is massive, hugely influential, and playing a role in more and more aspects of life in the US and around the world. The industry manages over $11 trillion in assets and owns companies that employ more than 11.7 million American workers, plus millions more around the world.

While the world and the global economy continue to struggle with the COVID-19 pandemic, private equity firms been buying companies at a record pace. As private equity firms and deals have grown, they have come to impact growing numbers of workers.

Private equity firms have often taken a low road approach and sought to reduce wages, benefits, and staffing at firms they acquire – with devastating consequences for workers, their families and their entire communities.

The mission of the Private Equity Stakeholder Project is to identify, engage, and connect stakeholders affected by private equity with the goal of engaging investors and empowering communities, working families, and others impacted by private equity investments.

About the Position:

The Private Equity Stakeholder Project is seeking a Campaign/ Research Director to lead the organization’s efforts to support workers, labor unions, worker centers and the organization’s overall work to ensure living wages, a voice at work, and safe, stable jobs for workers.

The Campaign/ Research Director will develop and execute strategy for the Private Equity Stakeholder Project’s work focused on workers and jobs, lead PESP staff focused on supporting workers, oversee research and communications focused on workers and jobs, lead the private equity/ institutional investor component of multiple campaigns, engage staff and trustees of institutional investors, communicate with stakeholders and stakeholder groups impacted by private equity investments, and assist with PESP’s research on investment managers and their investments.


  • Developing and executing strategy for the Private Equity Stakeholder Project’s work focused on workers and jobs, including research, communications, stakeholder engagement, policy, and other components of that strategy.
  • Lead implementation of research projects, including managing various staff’s assigned contributions to research and analysis
  • Manages production of public-facing materials – guides research, writing of materials, provides edits and feedback, ensures coordination with design/communications staff, oversees review and final approval
  • The Campaign/Research Director is responsible for leading a team and supporting staff in the research and implementation of campaign priorities, including internal and external interactions
  • Provides training and growth opportunities for team members to develop skills
  • Guides research and campaigns to appropriately interact with stakeholder audiences including institutional investors, grassroots organizations, and the media.
  • Facilitates building strong relationships with partner organizations
  • Engages with institutional investors around sustainable investment policies and practices.
  • Coordinates with policy and communications teams on relevant issues
  • Collaborates with other leads and directors to support organizational goals
  • Assists developing and implementing organizational and campaign priorities
  • Regular travel (starting mid 2022 or later).


  • At least 9 years of strategic research and campaigning or similar relevant experience.
  • Experience in a comparable position, which includes directing campaign strategy development and implementation, partnership development, communications strategies, political and regulatory engagement.
  • Strong knowledge of financial advocacy and engaging investors.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet tight deadlines.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to collaborate with team.
  • Experience hiring, leading and developing staff.
  • Good attention to detail and interest in doing research.
  • Strong writing and communication skills, including ability to communicate with a wide range of stakeholders such as investors, policymakers, media, unions, and community-based organizations.
  • Strong commitment to social and economic justice; experience working with diverse constituencies.

$85,000 – $115,000 annually based on experience plus full benefits.

All full-time PESP employees are eligible for 10 days of annual sick time, generous vacation time, 15 paid holidays, and employer-paid health, vision, and dental coverage. Position is remote within the United States.
