Location: Positions are open servicing the following areas: Washington, DC metropolitan area

However, you must be willing to travel to all areas covered by Local 400, including the entire states of Virginia and West Virginia and parts of Maryland, Tennessee, Ohio, North Carolina, and Kentucky.

Job Description
We are seeking a motivated Lead Organizer to join our team. The Lead Organizer will work with the Organizing Director and a small team of organizers and lost timers to build power and grow our local union.

This position is responsible for the supervision and development of organizing staff and member lost timers. The Lead Organizer will conduct a wide array of organizing activities, including leadership recruitment, training members, strategic planning, initiating, and running local organizing campaigns and implementation of goals and programs.

This is a full-time position and includes the following duties:

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Supervise the organizing and development of a team of staff organizers and lost time organizers; Develop local campaign plans with the goals, strategies, and tactics necessary to execute the plan, including effective management of staff, lost time, and administrative resources.
  • Visit workers at their job sites and in their homes and train organizers and lost time organizers in organizing.
  • Implement effective staff development and team building; Manage lists, charts, and databases.
  • Meet goals and deadlines.
  • Inform supervisor of activities, developments, and progress of assigned campaigns.


  • Experienced in leading and/or supervising multiple staff, assignments, projects, managing timelines, and effectively using database systems, or equivalent experience.
  • Ability to establish and maintain rapport and credibility with diverse demographic groups.
  • Excellent written and oral communications.
  • A demonstrated commitment to justice for working families, quality and affordable public higher education, and quality patient care.
  • Bilingual Spanish/English, spoken and written (preferred).
  • At least two years of previous experience in the labor movement or social justice movements.
  • Outgoing, welcoming, and professional demeanor required.
  • Excellent interpersonal, phone and written skills.
  • Detail oriented and highly organized with the ability to manage several projects.
  • Ability to work under pressure.
  • Flexible, supportive and team oriented.
  • Holds themself and others accountable for a high level of performance and integrity.
  • Basic computer knowledge, ability to use Windows, Microsoft Office/Excel/Google Drive.
  • Reliable transportation.
  • Must be available to work evenings and weekends.


  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Knowledge or experience in labor movement or related experience
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to lead, organize and plan work
  • Commitment to fight for justice and human rights
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Bilingual English/Spanish (and/or other languages) desirable
  • Willingness to work long, irregular hours
  • Valid driver's license
