Business Representative
Concert Department

Based in New York City, NY

 

American Federation of Musicians, Local 802 has an opening for a Business Representative in our Concert Department (Classical/Chamber/Ballet/Opera). The qualified candidate must exhibit a high level of commitment to the labor movement and the mission of Local 802.

Primary Duties

  • Contract negotiations
  • Contract administration and enforcement
  • Explaining contract terms, concepts, benefits and obligations to members and potential members
  • Grievance and arbitration procedures
  • Working with rank-and-file committees
  • Field work
  • Assist in organizing non-union employers
  • Organize and chair meetings
  • Working closely with department supervisors and officers to achieve the goals of the union and servicing the needs of the membership
  • Miscellaneous Union-related activities

Required Qualifications

  • Ability to work onsite (New York City)
  • Ability to work evening and weekend assignments as needed
  • Labor union operations knowledge and experience
  • Considerable experience negotiating contracts
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to collaborate, learn, and adapt quickly
  • Good decision making and analytical skills
  • Computer literate with proficiency in Microsoft Office suite and Google Docs
  • Strong and consistent attention to detail, organization, and accuracy

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in the performing arts—especially classical music

COVID-19 Policies

  • Current office policies require all employees to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and wear a mask while working on-site at Local 802.

Salary and Benefits

  • This is a full-time bargaining unit position, the employment terms of which are covered under an agreement with Local 802’s in-house union for its professional staff, the Organization of Union Representatives (O.U.R.). Compensation will be commensurate with experience in line with the staff collective bargaining agreement. Current minimum starting salary is $61,091.16.
  • Benefits include health insurance, defined benefit pension plan, 401(k) and paid time off.
