Training and Education

Classification: Full-time, Exempt

SEIU-UHW is a union of over 100,000 healthcare workers that prioritizes the leadership of rank and file members and the development of the staff who work with them. Essential Job Functions:

Steward Development

  • Core Steward Trainings, Mentorship trainings for Chief Stewards, Facilitation Trainings for Rep Chairs;
  • Work to build out steward councils to the be the organizing committee inside hospitals while simultaneously paying close attention to resolving issues at the lowest level possible;
  • Develop, oversee, and work to create the best training, mentorship and facilitation classroom training and feedback systems to create the conditions for members to run their own show.

Staff Development

  • Onboarding, training, on the job training, feedback systems

New Staff

  • Implement and oversee current onboarding program, new staff orientation, and in the field observation of new staff;
  • Overseeing implementation of the new staff program in a way that reinforces a culture of member’s leading, builds basic organizing skills, adopts technology, and achieves outstanding results

Feedback and Evaluation

  • Drive implementation and adoption of robust feedback and evaluation of field staff;
  • Create and upskill supervisors to give quality feedback to their staff after every cycle of each campaign to ensure ongoing development of the staff person using the campaigns as a vehicle to do that, annual evaluations to set intentions for the following year, and 360 feedback process to focus attention on rising talent with a particular emphasis on women and people of color.

Leadership trainings - Summits, Leader Academies and Executive Board development

  • Create easily translatable content that moves the mission of the organization and the requirements of the campaign in a way that member leaders participate in the visioning, creation and implementation of ongoing and one off trainings;
  • Ensure that the classroom part of the training connects with ongoing campaign work and that the skills are reinforced in the campaign.

Qualifications:

  • 5-7 years labor experience including time as an organizer;
  • 3 years supervisory experience;
  • Training design, development and implementation for adult learners in a popular education style;
  • Ability to execute with precision on the program, drive accountability and achieve results;
  • Highly detail oriented, analytical and organized;
  • Work independently, report accurately and inspire others to do the same;
  • Build and be part of an incredible team, awesome at collaboration;
  • Ability to work effectively with member committees to create, design and implement;
  • Fantastic facilitation skills—ability to elicit interaction, hear the feedback, summarize it effectively, lead people in a certain direction while accommodating for change based on the feedback;
  • Love technology and be prepared to do battle with it to make it work for us.

Tools:

  • The Coordinator is required to have a valid driver’s license, automobile insurance and a working automobile.
  • Vehicles purchased must be union made as approved by the United Auto Workers Union as a condition to receive the auto allowance.
  • Driving /Travel both statewide and out of state with overnights and periods away from home may be required.

Physical Requirements

  • Sitting at a computer workstation for extended periods (up to four hours at a time) typing.
  • Ability to bend and stoop.
  • Employees must recognize that working in the labor movement is tough, demanding work, which sometimes requires working long irregular hours including weekends, nights and holidays that may necessitate over time.    
  • Occasional travel may be required for training and/or work-related issues

Relationships:

  • The Coordinator works closely with and interacts with employees, Union members, unorganized workers, employers, government officials, the Executive Board members, officers, other staff, staff from other labor organizations and grassroots organizations.

Compensation
Salary is on a scale that starts at $98k and includes a generous benefit package.
