Communications Director

Based in Seattle, WA


The Communications Director is responsible for coordinating communications strategies in organizing, contract and other priority campaigns for IAM District Lodge 751. The position will work closely with union leadership in developing and implementing communications strategies and tactics. The position will be responsible for managing and editing the Aero Mechanic, our monthly print newspaper, helping to maintain 751 websites and Facebook pages, as well as other social media.


  • Responsible for producing the IAM 751 newspaper which includes taking photos, finding story leads, interviewing story participants and handling layout, design and file preparation for printing and posting on our website.
  • Attend monthly local lodge meetings to obtain story leads, remain informed on union activities and help address concerns Stewards and members bring forward.
  • Support the planning and implementation of communications strategies and tactics for campaign priorities in coordination with union leadership.
  • Develop flyers, brochures and direct mail pieces, video and other materials with direction and guidance from union leaders as needed.
  • Execute earned and paid media efforts, including conceiving and holding events such as press conferences and actions; also drafts op-eds and letters, with direction and guidance from union leaders as needed.
  • Conceive and implement comprehensive digital campaigns through print, web, and social media channels.
  • Assist with worker and community mobilization for priority campaigns.
  • Conduct training in communications strategy and best practices, message development and delivery techniques, and digital tools.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


  • Five years of experience in labor, politics, and/or journalism, or a combination of education and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.


  • Knowledge of and experience in advocacy communications and labor, political or community organizing campaigns.
  • Experience developing, implementing and coordinating creative and multi-dimensional communications strategies, including identifying and creating opportunities to drive messaging.
  • Knowledge of and experience with media relations.
  • Knowledge of design and video editing tools, such Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, Premiere).
  • Experience running multi-channel digital campaigns and knowledge of digital media platforms including web content management systems, email tools, social media, etc.
  • Ability to evaluate the success of a digital campaign by compiling and reviewing analytics.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
  • Ability to develop a campaign message and enforce message discipline in fast-paced campaigns.
  • Ability to write and create leaflets, brochures, direct mail pieces, video scripts and other materials.
  • Ability to use initiative to execute projects that may be vaguely defined.
  • Ability to set priorities, work under pressure, handle multiple projects simultaneously, meet established deadlines, and use initiative.
  • Must thrive in an environment with tight deadlines, changing priorities, high-pressure and irregular hours.
  • Strong understanding of union membership, the labor movement and how to craft messaging to reach target audience.

Preferred Experience:

  • Familiarity with creating digital videos and the use of editing software such as Adobe Premiere.

Salary Range: $120,000 – $150,000
