Communications Director

Based in Portland, OR

Job Opening: SEIU Local 503 is seeking a Communications Director to be a part of our Senior Leadership Team.

SEIU Local 503 is a dynamic and growing union. Over the last 20 years we have tripled in size and are now the largest union in Oregon. Our work has led to incredible gains for working families, including standard-setting contracts in the long-term care industry, historic investments in public services, raising the minimum wage, and making steps toward a fair and equitable economy for Black, white and brown people in every corner of our state.

As Communications Director, you’ll play an important part in everything we do. The ideal candidate will have experience running teams, managing budgets and working on multiple projects simultaneously. And as a member of our Senior Leadership Team, you’ll help lead on organizational development as we work to become an anti-racist union.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Manage a six-person communications team and a seven-figure budget to carry out the communications and marketing needs of SEIU Local 503.
  • Develop and execute an annual communications plan that delivers on the union’s core goals to grow, win for our members, elect pro-worker candidates, and enact pro-worker policies.
  • Run public-facing campaigns to support contract bargaining campaigns, political and advocacy work, and union organizing.
  • Manage SEIU 503’s public relations work, including serving as the primary point of contact for the media.
  • Serve on the Senior Leadership Team to lead on organizational development and strategy.

Additional duties:

  • Participate directly in political action, such as door-to-door canvassing, phone banking, and get-out-the-vote drives.
  • Support other departments with internal (staff-facing) communications work.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Qualifications & Requirements:

  • 5 years of progressive experience in communications and marketing.
  • Proven ability to execute multiple communications and marketing programs simultaneously in a high-visibility, face-paced environment.
  • Experience supervising communications staff and managing budgets.
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills.
  • Experience as an on-the-record spokesperson.
  • Freedom to work irregular hours, including weekends, and to travel as needed.

The following experience will make you even more appealing as a candidate:

  • Experience working in the labor movement.
  • Familiarity with Oregon state government, the long-term care sector, or state and local politics.
  • Experience working in a medium-to-large organization.
  • Graphic design.
  • Video editing.
  • Bilingual, Spanish.

Compensation & Benefits:

  • The salary range for this position is $79,500 to $105,936 annually.
  • The employer pays 15% on top of your salary toward your 401k retirement benefit.
  • Fully paid premiums for employee healthcare (medical, dental, and vision), eligible dependents and domestic partner benefits. That's right, you do not pay a nickel toward your own or your dependent care premium coverage. We have amazing health care with no deductible.
  • Cell phone & car allowance of up to $480 per month.
  • Flexible Spending Account of an additional $200 per month (with cash option).
  • Relocation assistance also available.
