Payroll Accountant

The Directors Guild of America has an opening for a Payroll Accountant. We are looking for a highly capable payroll accountant that will spend seventy percent of their time administrating the company’s payroll and the other percentage working on various projects using MS Office and Navision. In this role, your duties will include ensuring accurate salary payments, calculating overtime earnings and deductions and updating employee hiring or termination information and preparing journal entries to enter in the company’s financial software.

The position is not remote and payroll accountant is expected to be in the office daily, along with the accounting team.

To ensure success as a payroll accountant, you should demonstrate knowledge of applicable tax laws and ideally have experience in a similar role. The payroll accountant will be detail-oriented, accurate, timely and flexible. Capable of being flexible and works well in a smaller company environment.


  • Implements, maintains, and reviews payroll processing and accounting systems to ensure timely and accurate processing of payroll transactions including salaries, benefits, garnishments, taxes, and other deductions.
  • Ensures accurate and timely processing of payroll updates including new hires, terminations, and changes to pay rates.
  • Prepares and maintains accurate records and reports of payroll transactions.
  • Ensures compliance with federal, state, and local payroll, wage, and hour laws and best practices.
  • Facilitates audits by providing records and documentation to auditors.
  • Identifies and recommends updates to payroll accounting software, systems, and procedures.
  • Preparing ledger entries with earnings and deductions.
  • Attending to payroll inquiries from employees.
  • Prepare and maintain Excel spreadsheets for DGA events and statutory requirements, ensuring accuracy and reconciliation to company’s financial records.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Extensive experience in preparing ledger entries and account reconciliations.
  • In-depth knowledge of applicable tax laws.
  • Experience in preparing payroll and tax reports, as well as answering payroll inquiries.
  • Ability to maintain and update employees' payroll files.
  • A self-starter, with excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • A team-player, willing to receive and share thoughts and practices among the accounting team and should be flexible in working independently and with a team.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Able to comprehend existing processes and understand why they exist before suggesting any changes.

Education and Experience:

  • An associate's or bachelor's degree in accounting.
  • Fundamental Payroll Certification (FPC) or Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) will be advantageous.
  • A minimum of five years' experience as a Payroll Accountant, or in a similar role.
  • Proficiency in Payroll Software, such as ADP Workforce and knowledge of working with various financial institutions websites for administrating benefits.
  • Proficient with MS Office and MS Navision or similar ERP system.

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods of setting at desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift 15 pounds at times.
