Temporary Council Representative/Internal Organizer

Oregon AFSCME Council 75 is now accepting résumés from people with a passion for helping workers fight for more fair and equitable workplaces.

Oregon AFSCME is a fast growing and dynamic union, representing over 27,000 public employees and non-profit employees.

Council Representative/Internal Organizer:

  • Identify, recruit, and develop worksite leaders and move workers into action;
  • Develop and implement effective campaigns to win strong union contracts;
  • Use analytical skills to interpret contract language, investigate and process grievances, prepare contract proposals and bargain contracts;
  • Engage with new employees and be able to effectively communicate the union difference
  • Work involves long and irregular hours, including nights and weekends; this assignment works with hospitals workers that work day/evening/night shifts

Qualified Candidates:

  • Are dedicated to improving the quality of life of working people
  • Demonstrate ability to engage with worker leaders to develop their confidence and skills as worksite leaders
  • Develop and facilitate leadership trainings through one on one meetings and large group trainings
  • Are willing to conduct work site visits and home visits
  • Plan and carry out effective organizing and contract campaigns
  • Enter assessments and other data collected in a database
  • Develops volunteer organizers and/or lost timers from within the AFSCME membership.
  • Have excellent interpersonal & communication skills, including the ability to successfully relate to people from a wide range of backgrounds and cultures;
  • Have advanced ability to identify and address personal biases.
  • Can demonstrate working knowledge, through personal and/or work-related experience, in advancing racial justice, understanding how systems of oppression intersect, and applying an equity lens in policy and programming processes, and working knowledge, through personal and/or work-related experience, in the needs of and barriers faced by people of color.
  • Will perform successfully in team settings;
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and automobile for work use;

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience resolving workplace disputes and advocating on behalf of others, and/or engaging people in social justice organizing.
  • Internal union experience: contract enforcement, bargaining, and experience with grievance procedures
  • Professional experience in union organizing or community based organizing
