Director, Information Systems

Based in San Jose, CA


CSEA is recruiting a Director to manage our Information Systems Department. The ideal person for this position understands and anticipates the technology requirements of a rapidly changing Union.

The Director evaluates the Union’s technology needs at both strategic and tactical levels, and plans and manages their transition as technology, applications and systems evolve.

The Director researches new products, evaluates innovations in technology and their benefit to CSEA, and creates a culture of continuous improvement and innovation.

CSEA is a public employee union representing over 250,000 classified school employees who work in 750 school districts and community colleges in California. The primary work location for this position is San Jose, CA.

Examples of duties:

  • Prioritizes and manages budgets for statewide technology spending. Plans for projects, equipment, and upgrades.
  • Partners with stakeholders to identify and address inefficient, ineffective, outdated processes and technology.
  • Directs and supports introduction and adoption of new systems and processes.
  • Manages vendors and contracts.
  • Leads, coaches, motivates and manages performance of IS staff.
  • Writes, manages policies and procedures.
  • Oversees enterprise systems: development, maintenance, and integration of CSEA’s core membership information, financial, website content management, data warehouse, and cloud-based systems and services.
  • Provides technology guidance and resources for special projects and events, including CSEA’s Annual Conference.
  • Develops and implements technology plans for membership-driven initiatives, including member recruitment, assessment and communications needs.
  • Consults and provides strategic and tactical guidance on data and technology needs for political campaigns, including voter match, voter ID and GOTV outreach.
  • Develops new systems, services, and initiatives to meet the Association’s needs.
  • Manages evolving system infrastructure to align with CSEA’s long-term goals.
  • Oversees infrastructure: WAN/LAN/internet, virtual and physical servers, printers, security, and disaster/recovery/backup procedures.
  • Manages operations: help desk support, documentation, and technical training.
  • Drives operational excellence to ensure reliable infrastructure and superior customer service.

Knowledge of:

  • Enterprise applications (e.g. member-relationship management, financial), cloud-based services
  • Databases, integration of related systems, data integrity principles and tools.
  • Video conferencing, collaboration, webinar, and telecommunications technologies.
  • IT infrastructure, networks, help desk support, security, and disaster/recovery.
  • Political campaigns, voter targeting and match, mapping and canvassing tools.
  • Web content management systems and web applications.
  • Project management and planning.
  • Systems and workflow analysis, process improvement methods.

The ideal candidate will have the following background:

  • 6 years’ IS and management experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree.

The salary range for the Director, Information Systems is $142,959 – $182,456. Starting salaries are typically at the first step on our salary range, although consideration may be given for candidates with exceptional qualifications and experience.
