Location: Primary location Oakland but open to a remote work arrangement in other AFSCME office locations in California
Job Classification: Full-time, Permanent, Union, Exempt
Salary: $84,770 – $99,742

AFSCME Local 3299 is a dynamic progressive labor union representing 27,000 Service and Patient Care workers at the University of California. We are a member-driven union dedicated to building a strong union to fight for our members’ benefits, jobs and families.

The Research Department conducts in-depth research related to the University and its activities, including timely policy issues around higher education and healthcare, housing, and real estate development. It also helps develop and implement strategic campaigns in support of the union’s organizing and bargaining activities. We are currently seeking a Strategic Campaign Researcher to join our Research Department who has specific expertise with real estate development, with a particular focus on public-private partnership development, and land use/planning processes.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Evaluate budgetary, policy, and regulatory issues related to higher education and health care — including analyses of public budgets, new development activities, hospital funding streams, and patient care data
  • Provide research to support the Union’s legislative program, organizing priorities, contract negotiations, and fact finding proceedings
  • Perform in-depth corporate, financial and power structure research and analysis
  • Help design and execute campaign strategy and tactics
  • Produce research materials to educate members, the general public, policy makers, and the media
  • Provide contract enforcement support to ensure compliance with the Union’s collective bargaining agreements

Desired qualifications include:

  • Minimum of three years of experience successfully performing union and/or social justice research
  • Minimum of one year experience with new development activities and land-use/planning processes
  • Excellent research skills and familiarity with corporate research and/or corporate campaigns
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to plan, research, write and edit quality research materials
  • Comfortable with contract costing, as well as general ease with overall data analysis
  • Proficiency in spreadsheets (Excel), database work, and Google Workspace (formerly G-suite)
  • Ability to work directly and collaborate with member leaders, organizers, elected officials and advocacy organizations
  • Ability to take initiative, to work with a team, and to successfully handle multiple projects with tight deadlines
  • Strong commitment to the labor movement and social justice work
  • Willingness to work irregular hours, sometimes including weekends and evenings
