State Affiliated Political Organizer (SAPO)

Based in SW Portland, OR


The SAPO will be responsible for working with the AFT-Oregon’s VP of Political Action, Communication Specialist, and Lobbyist to strengthen the legislative and political field work of the AFT members in Oregon.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement an effective political program
  • Assist locals with levies and school board races;
  • Assist with coordinating member engagement in federal elections and legislation
  • Develop materials needed for grassroots political action;
  • Develop and/or deliver trainings
  • Provide locals with political information;
  • Increase AFT-Oregon’s political fundraising;
  • Conduct with Team candidate screening;
  • Represent AFT-Oregon at Oregon AFL-CIO political meetings;
  • Represent AFT-Oregon at coalition meetings as assigned;
  • Travel statewide to help locals with political duties;
  • Attend AFT-Oregon meetings and workshops as assigned;
  • Assist VP of Political and Legislative Action with responsibility
  • Handle other assigned duties.
  • Work with the national AFT political department as needed


  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
  • Experience designing and implementing political action or union grass roots activities;
  • Ability to speak and present to various size audiences;
  • Independent project management skills
  • Ability to work with people from a wide range of backgrounds
  • Ability to listen actively and frame issues
  • Experience in unions or other social justice organizations
  • Engagement in the political process
  • Demonstrated ability to write and speak effectively
  • General computer literacy and proficiency in basic data management
  • Social media skills
  • Willingness to work long hours and participate in union-wide activities
  • Knowledge of PreK-16 education, healthcare and labor issues preferred
  • Experience with LAN/VAN


  • Position is located in SW Portland, Oregon
