Type: Full-Time
Location: Washington | DC | 20036 | USA

The Legal Department of the Service Employees International Union has an immediate opening for a Law Fellow to focus on work in our Property Services division. The SEIU Law Fellowship Program was established to introduce recent law graduates to a broad range of legal work within an international union, and offers an excellent opportunity for new lawyers to work with experienced union-side lawyers on a variety of cutting-edge issues related to the advancement of workers' interests. The program was renamed the Norm Gleichman Fellowship to honor the life of Deputy General Counsel Norm Gleichman, who was a dedicated mentor to SEIU law fellows.

SEIU is a progressive, dynamic, and growing labor organization of over 2 million members in the United States, Puerto Rico, and Canada, united by the belief in the dignity and worth of workers and the services they provide. We are dedicated to improving the lives of workers and their families and creating a more just and humane society. Attorneys in SEIU's Legal Department engage in innovative lawyering to further the organization's interests in organizing non-union workers, improving working conditions for all workers, engaging in political action, and achieving social justice. This includes legal work on a wide range of litigation, regulatory and legislative matters, and policy and advising on union governance issues, organizing campaigns, and other legal work in furtherance of working people, and their communities.

The Fellow will be involved in at least some of the following types of work: litigation to enforce the labor and employment rights of workers; handling matters before the National Labor Relations Board; drafting amicus briefs before the NLRB and appellate courts; advising and assisting staff organizers on organizing campaigns and during strikes; drafting or reviewing health complaints; drafting strike notices; involvement in policy and legislative initiatives; and participating in SEIU's political program. The Property Services Division Law Fellow can expect to interview workers, and draft and file various complaints, often related to COVID-19 workplace safety.

The Fellowship is based in Washington, DC, and has a one-year term, with an option to renew for a second year (with the mutual agreement of the Fellow and SEIU). Work can be performed remotely, and the Fellow can work West Coast hours if based on the West Coast. SEIU staff enjoy benefits including comprehensive health benefits, major medical, dental and vision for employee and eligible dependents, domestic partner benefits, competitive salaries, holidays and vacation policies, and a 401(K) Plan. Recent law graduates and judicial clerks are welcome to apply. Bar admission is preferred but pending admission to at least one state or DC required.

Applicants should have excellent research and writing skills, a demonstrated commitment to workers' rights, and a desire to practice union-side labor law.

Salary: Up to one year out of law school - $67,895; up to two years out of law school - $71,251; up to three years out of law school - $75,227.
