Staff Accountant

Based out of the office in Tualatin for covering Oregon

 

Job Title: Staff Accountant
Department: Finance
Supervisor’s Title: Director of Finance
Exempt Status: Exempt
Location: Oregon (ONA’s office is in Tualatin, Oregon. We represent and organize workers across the state.)

Hours and Travel: This is a 0.8 FTE position. Training and some on-going work may be required to be performed in the office. Currently the members of the department are primarily working remotely. Work hours are flexible.

POSITION OVERVIEW
This is a new position, joining a department that currently includes the Director of Finance and two staff accountants. This position will support existing processes and procedures and will be encouraged to make suggestions to increase efficiencies. Experience and expertise in accounting and payroll practices as well as strong interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate are all preferred.

ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Accounting duties include:
    • Process daily cash activity and perform month end bank reconciliations.
    • Process semi- monthly payroll for ONA employees, prepare and record associated journal entry.
    • Perform monthly payroll benefit account reconciliations.
    • Reconcile and record monthly investment account activity.
    • Assist with accounts payable processing as needed.
    • Perform general ledger account reconciliations as assigned.
  • Prepare and distribute monthly financial reports to department managers and ONA bargaining units.
  • Communicate with staff and vendors via phone or email as necessary.
  • Assist with budgeting process.
  • Assist with year-end functions such as preparation of tax forms and supporting the annual external audit.
  • Assist with filing, copying, mailing, and other duties as assigned.
  • Other tasks as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:

  • Technical skills:
    • Must have a thorough working knowledge of accounting principles and functions.
    • Must have advanced knowledge and experience working with Excel spreadsheets.
  • Communication skills:
    • Must keep finance co-workers informed of current workload, emerging issues and discuss task priorities.
    • Provide information relevant to ongoing department projects in a timely manner.
    • Demonstrate commitment to customer services when assisting ONA staff, members, and vendors.
    • Ability to discuss options and factors considered when explaining reasoning behind a decision.
  • Workplace skills:
    • Ability to work independently and in the absence of specific instructions.
    • Ability to work collaboratively with team members.
    • Ability to change work priorities in response to emerging needs.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in accounting and three or more years of general ledger accounting work experience.
  • Strong aptitude for quantitative problem solving, use of spreadsheets, and analysis of financial data.
  • Experience with accounting software
  • Proficient in the language and practice of diversity, equity and inclusion and committed to approaching and building all work through these values and priorities

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:
This is a 0.8-time, exempt position. The salary is based on applicable years of experience applied to the wage scale outlined in associations salary placement policy.

There is an exceptional benefits package including employer paid medical, dental, vision, long and short-term disability, life insurance, 401(k) employer match of up to 11%. Plus, annually (numbers will be prorated for the 0.8 FTE): 5 weeks’ vacation, 8 personal days, 2 weeks sick time.
