Nursing Home Sector

Role: The Field Director for the Nursing Home Sector is a senior staff position in SEIU Healthcare Pennsylvania with responsibility,  under the direction of the Vice President for the Nursing Home Sector (VP), for organizing for power with nursing home workers across Pennsylvania. The Field Director is responsible for leading, training, and supervising nursing home sector internal organizers. The Field Director assists the Vice President in conducting education, organizing, and mobilization programs with union members as part of the strategy set by the Officers and Executive Board to build the union and strengthen a wider movement for social justice and pro-working family politics in Pennsylvania.  

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate in nursing home sector strategic planning meetings with VP and other union leaders

  • Design, implement, and assess union plans in the nursing home sector

  • Organize and lead membership campaigns based around collective bargaining, implementation of collective bargaining agreements, signing up and maintaining membership, member leader recruitment and development, resolving workplace problems, new organizing, labor and community solidarity, and political action

  • Coordinate education and mobilizing efforts, new member events, leadership conferences, new organizing meetings, and other campaign events

  • Work with organizers as a team and individually to set goals, create plans to meet goals, and ensure accountability to those plans

  • Train organizers in campaign organizing tactics and best practices

  • Supervise and manage performance of organizers

  • Mentor and develop skills with organizers around field work, including identifying organizer strengths and areas for growth, and working with them to develop their skills

  • Serve on the Officer and Senior Program Team to analyze and implement union programs

Reports to: VP


  • Five years of experience as a union organizer

  • Three years of experience with staff leadership and supervision

Skills and Competencies

  • Experience with coordinating all aspects of issue, organizing, or political campaigns

  • Experience with collective bargaining and contract campaigns

  • Experience working with union members in the healthcare industry, preferably with nursing home workers

  • Experience drafting campaign plans, including budgets

  • Demonstrated ability to resolve conflicts while maintaining important and effective relationships

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in politically sensitive and high-pressure environments

  • Demonstrated ability to exercise excellent political judgment and discretion

  • Demonstrated experience in developing campaign and personal work plans and goals

  • Effective time management skills, including prioritizing and managing multiple tasks

  • Demonstrated ability to build and motivate teams and work effectively in a team environment

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently within the context of a plan

  • Excellent listening, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills

  • Excellent communication skills (both written and oral) and ability to facilitate meetings with diverse participation

  • Knowledge of and experience using digital technology (Zoom, SMS/mobile, social networks, Hustle) and tools (VAN/Every Action/predictive dialers) for campaigns

  • Computer proficiency is required, including advanced level proficiency in the Google suite, Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint

Requirements of the Position

  • Ability to work with a diverse group of union staff and member leaders and lead in such a way to advance equity and inclusion of everyone in the union

  • Ability to travel on a regular basis

  • A valid driver’s license and vehicle, or willingness to acquire a vehicle

  • Willingness to work long and irregular hours, including weekends and evenings and holidays as required by the strategic context of campaigns

  • Exemplary commitment to trade union principles and the cause of labor

Compensation: Salary range from $62,000 to $82,000, depending on experience, plus benefit package includes fully premium paid health insurance, defined-benefit pension, optional 401(k), etc.
