Transportation Trades Department, AFL-CIO

Transportation Trades Department, AFL-CIO

Communications Director

Based in Washington, DC

The Transportation Trades Department, AFL-CIO (TTD), a coalition of international and national transportation unions, seeks a Communications Director to join our team. TTD consists of 33 affiliated unions who together represent workers in all areas of public and private sector transportation.

The several million members of TTD’s affiliated unions operate, maintain, build and service our transportation system and infrastructure. TTD focuses its advocacy efforts on federal investments, the authorization of major programs, annual appropriations, policies regarding job creation, worker protections, safety, security, transportation technologies and the future of work, aviation, maritime and other sectoral trade issues, and other policies that affect frontline workers represented by our member unions.

Reporting to the Chief of Staff and TTD’s elected officers, the Communications Director will develop TTD’s long-term communications strategy; author and edit press releases, statements, op-eds, testimony before Congress, and speeches; manage press inquiries; maintain relationships with, and pitch stories to reporters; and work collaboratively with TTD’s policy team and affiliated unions to advance our advocacy agenda across a number of mediums and platforms.

The candidate should have excellent writing and editing skills, experience with digital media and content development, experience in Adobe Creative Cloud or other similar graphic design platforms, and a knowledge of inside- and outside- the beltway news publications. Applicants should have previous Capitol Hill, campaign, or senior communications experience. This is not an entry level position. The candidate should have a minimum of five years’ experience in press or communications, with preference given to candidates who have worked on Capitol Hill, the executive branch, labor organizations or non-profits.

TTD firmly believes that the anti-worker policies we fight back against disproportionately hurt the most marginalized members of our society, including people of color, people from working-class backgrounds, women, and LGBTQ people. Advocating for these communities is centered in the work we do, and we therefore strongly encourage people with these identities or who are members of other marginalized communities to apply.

Excellent benefits, including a generous healthcare package, pension, transit allowance and vacation/paid holidays.
