Auditor

The Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) has an opening for an Auditor to begin immediately.  The ATU is the largest union representing transit workers in the United States and Canada. Founded in 1892, the ATU is comprised of more than 200,000 members, including: metropolitan, interstate, and school bus drivers; paratransit, light rail, subway, streetcar, and ferry boat operators; mechanics and other maintenance workers; station agents, clerks, baggage handlers, municipal employees and others. The ATU has more than 250 constituent Locals in 44 U.S. states, the District of Columbia and nine (9) Canadian provinces.

Individuals with a keen eye for detail, a strong ability to work under pressure tend to excel in the position of Auditor. A bachelor's degree is required for the position (Finance/Accounting preferred), as well as 5 years of relevant experience. CPA preferred.

Description:
The incumbent will be responsible for performing audit activities designed to assess the adequacy of the internal controls, records, policies, procedures, and processes in place at the ATU local unions. In addition, the position will oversee the recording of investment activities in various fund and track the organizations’ vast assets and related depreciation expenses.  Must be knowledgeable in federal and state regulations as well as applicable policies and procedures.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Analyze and assess audit reports sent in by ATU locals
  • Conduct investigations of irregularities discovered by or brought to the auditor’s attention
  • Perform detailed examinations of audit documentation
  • Communicate any internal control weakness and recommendation for complying with findings and legal requirements to supervisors
  • Record investment activity for general fund and pension fund portfolios and reconcile to statements and general ledger
  • Classify all assets and monitor their depreciation
  • Train ATU local officers about proper accounting procedures
  • Assist ATU locals with financial inquiries
  • Stay current on union trends, and best accounting and audit practices
  • Other duties as assigned

Skills Required:

  • Proficiency in QuickBooks/Excel
  • Proficiency in GAAP
  • Proficiency in Department of Labor tax policies and deadlines
  • Strong knowledge in state and federal regulations
  • Strong mathematical and analytical skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently
  • Intense attention to detail
  • Ability to make routine decisions
  • Ability to interact pleasantly with coworkers/vendors

Location:
The Auditor will work out of the ATU’s headquarters office at 10000 New Hampshire Avenue, Silver Spring, Maryland.

Compensation:
Salary will range from $90,000 to $100,000 depending on experience.  ATU provides medical, dental, vision and life insurance with no employee premiums; a defined-benefit pension plan with no employee contributions; a 401(k) savings plan; and paid vacation and sick leave.
