Strategic Campaign Researcher & Communicator

SEIU local 26 is a dynamic local of over 8000 janitors, security officers, and airport workers in Minnesota, the people who clean and protect some of largest corporate headquarters in the world and who have a proud history of militant fights for social and economic justice.

  • Local 26 members were some of the first security officers in the country to go on strike and engaged in acts of strategic civil disobedience to win their contracts, to raise standards within their industry across 2000 suburban and downtown officers.
  • The 4000 janitors of the union, a multilingual bargaining unit made up of Latin American, East African, and American-born workers, created an alliance in 2009 with environmentalist allies to win some of the first Green Cleaning language in the country, and later struck in February 2020 to reduce climate change emissions in our industry.
  • Local 26 in the past 5 years has led fights for racial justice that resulted in organizing over 1000 workers at MSP airport (raising pay for the mostly east African workforce from $9 to $15 over that time) and created the first retail store cleaners master contract in the country (raising pay from $9 to $14.50 over that same period).

We are seeking a new team member with strong data collection and analysis skills for the Strategic Research position to help forward our goals of improving standards in the industries we serve, the working conditions of our members, and the communities we live in. Strategic Research collects and distributes accurate and timely information and contributes to data-driven decision-making to set and reach organizational goals. Strong candidates will have experience creating and managing databases and a desire to learn about the vast social-political-corporate arena in which we operate. This position also is responsible for the basic internal communications of the local, including texting, social media, and websites.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Create and manage databases including Excel, Access and VAN;
  • Develop new, technology-driven ways to share data with team members and the public;
  • Collect and analyze data from both public and private sources;
  • Writing letters, public records requests, memos, reports, white papers, and other documents as needed;
  • Creating campaign messaging documents working with impacted leaders, organizers, communication staff, and campaign coordinators;
  • Helping coordinate campaign strategies in consultation with directors and organizers;Developing and maintaining comprehensive campaign planning and tracking documents;
  • Planning, developing materials for, and executing activities including delegations, rallies, meetings, protests, and direct actions as part of campaign teams;
  • Manage facebook, twitter, email lists, website, and newsletters, writing and posting content primarily for SEIU members.
  • Continue to develop the mission of SEIU Local 26, including “helping members tell our stories” in creative ways.
  • Other duties as assigned.


  • Strong commitment to the labor movement and socio-economic justice;
  • Proven ability to solve problems and simplify complex ideas;
  • Eagerness to learn and disseminate new ideas and information;
  • Understanding of collective bargaining and/or community organizing campaigns;
  • Proficient writing, communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Capable of working individually and as a team to meet goals and deadlines;
  • Willingness to work with our members and staff who represent a large array of races, cultures, religions and backgrounds; and
  • Ability to work occasional weekends and long, irregular hours and occasional travel.

Bonus Skills:

  • Proficiency in a second language;
  • Database management, data mining and geo-mapping;
  • Social media strategies in communities of color.
  • Knowledge of the commercial real estate industry; and
  • Labor, community or campaign organizing experience.

Pay and Benefits:
This is a position beginning in November 2021. Pay is between $42,000 and $65,000 depending on experience, on a scale commensurate with a union of low-wage members. This position is a part of a staff union, and has Healthcare and other benefits included. A car and valid driver’s license are required.

Location: Minneapolis-Saint Paul Metropolitan Area, Minnesota.
