Location: Pittsburgh, PA
USU - Grade 5
Starting Salary: $54,563

This position is responsible for implementing all aspects of the AFSCME Retirees growth, engagement and capacity building program with retiree chapter and subchapters in the field. As the public face of the union on retiree organizing and other campaigns the incumbent must promote the vision of the AFSCME retirees to potential and current retiree members and leaders, the staff and leadership of affiliates and fellow International Union staff.

DUTIES:

  • Performs all activities associated with retiree organizing and PEOPLE campaigns including assessing campaign potential, identifying and developing retiree leaders, creating retiree organizing and PEOPLE committees and tracking progress towards goals.
  • Writes plans to achieve overall retiree organizing and PEOPLE campaign goals.
  • Collaborates with retiree chapters to develop organizing, communications and mobilization plans and provides chapters support in achieving their goals.
  • Plans and conducts meetings with retiree chapters, subchapter and organizing committees including public speaking and conducting workshops.
  • Assists retiree chapters in data management using excel and other database systems such as UnionWare and VAN.
  • Drafts and designs organizing and PEOPLE recruitment mailings and other communications.
  • Implements strategies for retiree mobilization in political and legislative action campaigns.
  • Serves as the primary contact for retiree chapter and subchapter leaders to educate and mobilize AFSCME retirees in support of the union’s priorities.
  • Performs related work as required.

REQUIREMENTS:
Education & Experience:

  • Graduation from a four-year college is desirable and up to 3 years of experience in union, political or community organizing; or any combination of education and experience

Skills:

  • Knowledge of union organizing practices and principles.
  • Knowledge of mobilization strategies and tactics.
  • Leadership and motivational skills.
  • Good oral and written communications skills.
  • Ability to plan and run meetings and actions.
  • Knowledge of VAN and other data skills desirable.
  • Bilingual skills desirable

Travel, Driving & Work hours:

  • Driving, extensive travel, temporary assignments and extended work hours are required.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
