State Political Organizer:
This position is a result of a joint project between AFT-West Virginia and the American Federation of Teachers.

The State Political Organizer will be responsible for working to strengthen the legislative and political field work of AFT West Virginia.

The SPO will be responsible for strengthening the political and legislative education programs of AFT-West Virginia and the American Federation of Teachers through:

  • Increasing AFT-West Virginia political fundraising.
  • Developing and implementing an effective and accountable member-to-member communication system and political program.
  • Identifying and recruiting political and legislative activists among the AFT-West Virginia membership.
  • Facilitating and guiding AFT-West Virginia participation in coalition groups.
  • Considerable traveling in the state with minimal travel outside the state to help locals with political duties.
  • Other duties assigned by the President of AFT-West Virginia and/or the American Federation of Teachers.
  • Assist local affiliates with local political races.
  • Assist with coordinating member engagement in federal and state elections and legislation.
  • Develop materials needed for grassroots political action.
  • Develop and deliver trainings.
  • Represent AFT-West Virginia at AFL-CIO political meetings related to politics.
  • Attend AFT-West Virginia and AFT meetings and workshops as assigned.
  • Work with the national AFT political department as needed.


  • At least 3-5 years’ experience of designing and implementing political and/or union grassroots or related programs.
  • A demonstrated writing ability and the ability to communicate the union’s goals and objectives to affiliates.
  • Experience with campaign field writing or fundraising is a plus.
  • Working knowledge of West Virginia coalitions and groups with which AFT-West Virginia participates is a plus.
  • Experience working with unions or other social justice organizations.
  • Willingness to work long hours and participate in union-wide activities.
  • Knowledge of PreK-16 education, healthcare, and labor issues preferred.
  • Ability to speak and present to various size audiences.
  • Independent project management skills.
  • Ability to work with people from a wide range of backgrounds.
  • General computer literacy and proficiency in basic data management.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.

The first year of employment shall be considered probationary.
