Community Organizer

This is a regional position and not necessarily based out of New York City.


The NewsGuild of New York, an affiliate of the Communications Workers of America (CWA) and a dynamic, member-led union, seeks a highly experienced and motivated community organizer to work on an exciting contract campaign.

The ideal candidate will have at least three years community organizing experience running community-centered campaigns around economic justice issues. Experience working for or closely with labor unions is strongly preferred.

The position will be part of a staff team that reports to the President and Mobilizing Director. You must be a self-starter with the ability to receive ongoing feedback and direction, as well as work in a highly collaborative environment. This position requires long and varied hours, including some nights and weekends. This is a regional position and not necessarily based out of New York City.

Job Qualifications:

  • Minimum three years’ experience running large campaigns against tough employers;
  • Ability to relate, establish and cultivate meaningful relationships with others and to mobilize them to act;
  • Demonstrated success in providing direction and organizing training to community members;
  • The ability to write organizing plans;
  • Experience developing and working with coalitions;
  • Knowledge and experience using digital tools to organize across large distances;
  • Familiarity with community organizations, unions, and politicians in New York state a plus


  • Work with a team of staff members to develop and implement a comprehensive contract campaign in collaboration with community partners;
  • Developing out a coalition of community partners in support of a “Save the News” campaign tied to contract negotiations;
  • Working with community partners to support an escalating contract campaign culminating in a supermajority strike;
  • Organizing subscribers, advertisers, and politicians to support the union’s campaign;
  • Work with elected officials and community partners to support the union’s campaign

Salary starts at $85,000, commensurate with experience. Union-represented position, covered by the Local Representatives Guild.
