Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The Senior Campaign Organizer will work with the Northeast team to support JMA priorities in New Jersey and advance our vision of public goods for the most public good. They are responsible for supporting JMA initiatives by growing and organizing the network of workers, community members and coalition partners in New Jersey. The Senior Campaign Organizer also pays special attention to assessing, understanding, and organizing key stakeholders that can include elected officials, state agency staff, workers at a specific worksite, and/or organizational and union partners. In collaboration with the Northeast team, they will develop and execute campaigns to to win equity-based good jobs, climate justice & accountability policies in the state. The Senior Campaign Organizer will continue to grow JMA's reputation as a thought leader in New Jersey and will seek opportunities for JMA to contribute to meaningful policy efforts. Primary responsibilities include:

Within 6 months

  • Work with the Northeast team to develop plans that ensure workers, community members, union/organizational partners, and/or other key stakeholders are supported and contribute to JMA campaigns and projects in meaningful ways
  • Maintain 1:1 relationships with existing partners and identify and develop 1:1 relationships with new coalition partners and allies
  • Grow our coalition through regular meetings and consistent follow-up with key stakeholders
  • Cultivate relationships with transportation agency staff, attend regular board and committee meetings, review meeting materials, and monitor agency procurements and contract compliance
  • Develop campaign and organizing materials including fact sheets and memos
  • With proper training from the Northeast and Communications teams, develop the ability to act as an effective spokesperson for JMA’s vision, work, and campaigns in New Jersey
  • Demonstrate working knowledge of New Jersey political landscape and dynamics within the city, state, and community, and coalition spaces
  • Comply with all organizational policies and procedures, including timely attention to administrative responsibilities
  • Help contribute to JMA’s organizational development, for example assisting with grants efforts, and participating in JMA staff committees (not to exceed 15% of the time)

Within 1 year

  • Demonstrate in-depth knowledge of New Jersey political landscape and dynamics within the city, state, and community, and coalition spaces
  • Develop campaign strategies for JMA policies and priorities in NJ through regular power mapping, analysis of the political landscape, and identification of opportunities to build the power we need in order to win
  • Develop and strategize on regional earned media and press opportunities in collaboration with the Northeastern and Communications team
  • Contribute to peer and staff evaluations

Qualifications and Expectations:
The ideal candidate is a New Jersey resident, an experienced campaigner/organizer and is able to dive into our campaigns and take initiative over their work. Candidates should have many of these qualifications:

  • 3-7 years of experience in labor, community, and/or political campaigns
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to effectively communicate JMA’s work to the public and to a wide variety of stakeholders which may include coalition and union partners, elected officials, and government employees.
  • Ability to build and sustain authentic and productive working relationships with colleagues across race and other group identities, including JMA employees as well as external partners
  • Ability to continually assess and deepen the commitment of key stakeholders, through regular 1:1s, thoughtful asks, and securing of commitments
  • Maintain a high level of timely follow-up to follow through on commitments – both personal commitments made as well as commitments made by partners
  • Maintain flexibility: be ready to take advantage of unexpected opportunities and adapt quickly to change
  • Demonstrated self-awareness, empathy, and social skills in work and interpersonal interactions
  • Facilitation skills and ability to move coalition and/or worker committee members to shared agreement and action
  • Ability to work independently and remotely when necessary
  • Ability to carry out assignments to completion and meet deadlines
  • Familiarity with GoogleSuite and openness to learning new administrative programs such as BambooHR and Bill.com as well as search platforms such as Westlaw
  • Knowledge of and experience working within the political landscape and dynamics of diverse coalitions in New Jersey is a plus
  • Experience in labor, corporate and/or comprehensive campaigns, and in conducting power mapping is a plus

 Physical Requirements

  • Ability to travel in-state and regionally for meetings and events
  • Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards, including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards.
  • Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards
  • Must be able to talk, listen and speak clearly on telephone/video calls with reasonable accommodation

Compensation/Benefits:

  • Compensation for this role is $67,000 – $82,000 depending on years of experience
  • Employers (JMA) pay 100 percent of medical, dental, and vision premium
  • Generous PTO: 12 days paid vacation, 12 sick days, 9 federal holidays, 12 personal days per year, 2 floating holiday & 2-weeks paid time-off at the end of year
  • Annual salary increases
  • JMA contributes 5% of the employee salary towards their 401k plan after 6 months of employment

  • Work from home monthly $75 stipend
  • Work-from-home office set-up provided if needed

  • Due to COVID-19, JMA staff are currently working remotely but will return to an office location in NYC in January 2022. The NJ Campaigner will ideally live in Northern NJ and travel from NJ to NYC offices for meetings and events when not in the field.
