Assistant Business Agent

IATSE Local 161 is a Motion Picture local that covers Production Coordinators, Assistant Coordinators, Travel Coordinators, Production Accountants, Assistant Accountants, Payroll Accountants and Script Supervisors working in the film & television industry.

Local 161 has jurisdiction in 23 states east of the Mississippi including the District of Columbia with over 1200 members.

The Job:
The Local 161 Assistant Business Agent reports to the Business Agent and is the second highest-level staff person responsible for representing the union’s members.

Duties include supporting external and internal organizing, contract enforcement/grievance handling, membership administration, liaising with other locals to assist with organizing efforts, drafting membership communications and side letter agreements, supporting contract negotiations, archive management, and assisting the Business Agent as needed.

The job requires setting priorities, meeting deadlines, compiling and analyzing data, developing contract enforcement strategies and meticulous follow-through.

The position may require some travel to set and office visits as well as some evening and weekend work.


  • Minimum of two years’ experience working for a union/labor organization representing members, organizing, bargaining, and administering contracts and the ability to perform the other duties identified above and listed below.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Ability to travel as needed.
  • Relevant college degree is desirable but not required.

Specific Duties:

  • Articulate the Union's message and vision to the membership
  • Contract enforcement
  • Cultivate relationships with Studio Labor Relations departments.
  • Resolving member complaints at lower levels of the grievance procedure to avoid unnecessary arbitration.
  • Visit members in offices and on sets.
  • Travel to our regions to meet with members and Representatives of other IATSE Locals.
  • Communicate and collaborate with other industry union’s Representatives across the country on issues requiring cooperation between Local 161 with other Locals and unions.
  • Attend meetings, seminars, and conferences as needed representing Local 161, including NYC Central Labor Council Delegates Meetings, COMPTU meetings, IATSE meetings and events, NY Women in Film & Television events, and GA State AFL-CIO meetings. District Meetings and the General Executive Board meetings as well as meetings and training offered by the IATSE.
  • Assist and counsel members on matters such as preparing for a job interview, strategizing negotiations above scale, dealing with difficult people on the job, understanding the contract, workers’ rights, members responsibilities, etiquette and industry standards and other situations members face on the job.
  • Participate in and provide support to internal union committees.
  • Oversee archive management

Compensation: Excellent starting salary range of $70,000 – $95,000 commensurate with experience, and an excellent benefits package.
