Exciting Opportunity for a Policy Analyst/Researcher on High-Impact Campaigns!

The Los Angeles Alliance for a New Economy (LAANE) has been in the forefront of the economic justice movement in L.A. for over 25 years. LAANE combines organizing, research, communications, and policy development and leads broad-based labor, community and environmental coalitions. LAANE has been a national leader in fighting for a Living Wage, community benefit agreements, and continues to advocate for policies and programs that benefit the unemployed, low-wage workers, low-income communities, BIPOC communities and the environment.

Position responsibilities: We are seeking a Policy Analyst/Researcher interested in social, economic and racial justice and the labor movement. The candidate will focus on two (2) major comprehensive campaigns. This includes our Education Campaign, which is committed to transforming and protecting LA’s public schools, fighting for Community Schools, police-free schools, and several community demands won through the historic Teachers Strike of 2019. They will also focus on the grocery and retail industry, which is the second largest employer in LA, and Fair Workweek LA, which is a coalition of labor, worker rights advocates, clergy, community groups, health and safety groups, and retail and grocery workers calling for a fair scheduling policy and higher workplace standards and protections. Together, the coalition strives to make jobs in the retail and grocery industry sustainable and restore dignity and respect in the workplace.

Policy Analyst/Researcher will be responsible for: Conducting research and policy analysis to identify opportunities for policy development and shape campaign strategies in the public education sector and retail industry, using government and other public data sources (e.g. corporate research, research on laws, public decision-making processes, and the economy); Drafting reports, briefs, and advocacy materials (e.g. letters of support, FAQs, fact sheets, background memos); Presenting findings through written materials and oral presentations at public meetings, government hearings, and other venues; Representing LAANE at meetings and public actions; and Support the work of the organization as a whole.

Qualifications: Demonstrated a commitment to economic justice and the labor movement. Graduate degree in a related field, or relevant experience, such as experience as a researcher in the labor movement or with a social justice organization. Skills required: excellent analytical skills, written and verbal communications skills, familiarity with database and word processing software, basic quantitative skills including familiarity with spreadsheets, interviewing skills, ability to work well in a team. Also needed: willingness to work long hours and weekends when necessary, and ability to work independently. Reliable transportation is required. Strong preference for experience with: corporate research experience, GIS mapping, public records requests, writing reports, Spanish fluency.

Terms of employment: Starting salary is $58,240. Full health benefits; retirement plan; generous time off; parking. Friendly, team-oriented working environment.
