Founded in 1972, the Chinese Progressive Association (CPA) is a grassroots membership-based organization that empowers the Chinese community in San Francisco and promotes justice and equality for all people. CPA’s campaigns and programs improve the living and working conditions of working class immigrants and give ordinary community members a stronger voice in the decision-making processes that affect them. Our core strategies are community education and organizing, leadership development and alliance building.

Position Overview
As a Community Organizer with CPA, you will be responsible for part of CPA’s Tenant and Worker Center’s membership and base-building, leadership development, strategic services, and alliance work. The work requires extensive collaboration with other CPA staff, member leaders, and allies.

Key Roles and Responsibilities

  • Support/Lead CPA’s wage clinic and other strategic services work
  • Support CPA’s worker organizing
  • Support TWC campaigns, including outreach, mobilization, and campaign strategy

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Actively participate in CPA organizational campaigns, activities, and strategy discussions
  • Recruit and develop the leadership of members, including:
    • Recruit community members to participate in CPA campaigns and activities
    • Build 1-on-1 relationships with members
    • Develop and implement leadership goals, plans, and accountability with members
    • Support and organize member leaders to participate and lead campaigns
    • Facilitate political education and organize community-building events
  • Support CPA’s wage clinic, tenant outreach and other service provision to the community
    • Plan and conduct virtual and in-person outreach workshops and activities
    • Coordinate and help implement strategic services to the community for workers rights intake
    • Conduct workers rights consultations with workers experiencing wage theft and other labor violations
  • Support organizational language needs such as interpretation and written translation in Chinese
  • Support CPA civic engagement priorities, other programs and organization-wide activities as needed, such as electoral campaigns, field canvassing support, fundraising tasks as determined by organizational priorities and your supervisor.
  • Administrative duties such as reimbursement, time sheets, etc.

Essential Qualifications

  • Bilingual in Chinese (Cantonese, Toishanese and/or Mandarin speaking)
  • Commitment to social, economic and environmental justice, and bottom-up social change (interest in workers rights and labor law is a plus)
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, able to adapt culturally competent materials to reach immigrant workers
  • Strong emotional intelligence skills, able to connect and build relationships with Chinese immigrant working families
  • Can work effectively independently and as part of a team
  • Excellent attention to detail, follow-through, and project management skills
  • Proficient in G-Suite and Microsoft Office

Preferred Qualifications

  • Biliterate in Chinese
  • Knowledge of issues impacting low-income Chinese immigrants in San Francisco
  • Experience conducting community education and outreach activities
  • 1-3 years of experience in community, labor or political organizing

Work Environment
This position is in-person at the San Francisco office, following Covid-19 safety protocols.


  • $50,000 - $65,000 depending on experience and qualifications.
