A Better Connecticut Institute (ABCI), a newly formed non-profit dedicated to addressing the state’s racial and economic inequality, has an immediate job opening for a well-trained Researcher in policy, labor, budget, economic and education topics, who can also identify emerging issues – e.g. disparities in income and wealth, revitalizing first-rate public schools, access to good jobs, state investment in robust public services - on the horizon.

Core responsibilities are to:

  • Develop or compile and present research on Connecticut’s inequality in the form of reports, blog posts, fact sheets, and other material aimed at educating policy makers and the general public.
  • Deliver expert testimony at public hearings to support policies addressing the state’s inequality.
  • Organize panels, roundtable discussions, and conferences to promote progressive solutions for working people and social and racial justice.
  • Engage in public debates and in the media with well-researched responses including press statements and opinion pieces.
  • Work with the ABCI Board in developing its strategic planning, vision, and priorities to pursue.

The following qualities and experience are highly desirable:

  • An advanced degree in economics, public policy, sociology, or another social science
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills adaptable to reach state legislators, elected officials and the general public
  • Ability to represent the organization at meetings, events, before legislative bodies and in the media
  • Ability to analyze and interpret data sets such as the American Community Survey and other census data
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills
  • Grant-writing ability is a plus.
  • Knowledge of Connecticut’s political, social and economic landscape is a plus.
  • The job requires someone who is self-motivated but also able to work collaboratively with diverse organizations and with a board of directors.

ABCI is partnered with the Economic Policy Institute (EPI) a nationally recognized nonpartisan think tank that researches the impact of economic trends and policies on typical families in the United States. The ABCI employee will have the unique opportunity to be recognized as a fellow of EPI which will allow for consultation, participation in trainings and sharing of relevant data and research.

Salary and Benefits: Minimum starting salary of $75,000 and good benefits
