Staff Director

Based in Tigard, OR

 

Position Details:

Overview of Responsibilities:
The Staff Director is responsible for assisting the President and the Executive Board in the management and supervision of all matters pertaining to the organizational staff operations of OFNHP. Additionally, this position manages OFNHP organizational staff on a day-to-day basis under the direction of the OFNHP President, and in conjunction with the Executive Board, as constitutionally outlined, as applicable and where necessary.

Overall, the Staff Director must be a strong advocate for empowering our member-led organization model and the goals and missions of OFNHP through quality staff management processes and innovative campaign organization. This person possesses at least a bachelor’s degree, has at least three years of successful experience in a service or membership-led organization that includes major project or program management responsibility, particularly in the healthcare field. The Staff Director has a background in labor advocacy and collective bargaining. Demonstrates financial and budgetary expertise. This is a managerial position. Reports directly to the President.

Description of Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintains primary responsibility for implementing the policies, programs, and strategic plans of the organization, as directed by the President.
  • Assists and advises the President and Executive Board in developing organizational vision, strategic plans and campaigns via programs and positions in response to the changing external environment and the emerging issues that affect membership.
  • Creates and administers an internal organizing plan that will engage and mobilize members of OFNHP and coordinate with other programs within the organization.
  • Directs, supervises, and evaluates all organization staff, and reports new developments in staff and work activities to Union leadership.
  • Responsible for onboarding, developing, and holding organizers accountable through constructive feedback and evaluation of progress toward goals and deadlines.
  • Works with organizing staff to create and meet goals in detailed work plans for themselves and the teams they work with/within; identifies and develops appropriate and measurable work metrics.
  • Leads regular meetings and workshops with organizing staff and members.
  • Ability to integrate and manage multiple remote organizing staff members and member leaders.
  • Submits a written monthly and annual staff status report to the President.
  • Integrates local, state, and national issue-campaigns across the region.
  • Works within the budget adopted by the Executive Board; assists in planning fiscally responsible campaign budgets and targets, making appropriate and timely recommendations and requests for monies according to the policies of OFNHP.
  • Assists in obtaining and coordinating AFT resources.
  • General assistance, as requested by the President.

A record of executive leadership in strategic planning. Demonstrates professional expertise in assessing benefits and risks toward a goal of creating strategic advantages. An individual who possesses the ability to manage multiple projects with clear priorities and to easily articulate the connections between the big picture and specific action plans and timetables.

Leadership:
A proven record of senior organizational leadership marked by a passion for Union and Labor advocacy. A visionary leader who has confidently engaged others to identify and work toward common goals. Capable and willing to voice respectful and effective dissent when and where appropriate. Ability to delegate and lead but resists the urge to micromanage.

Must possess a growth mindset, a collaborative work style and be able to communicate effectively with a broad range of internal and external partners. Must have the confidence to lead courageously and possess resilience in a rapidly changing environment. Evidence of success in achieving desired outcomes when leading organizational innovation and change. A leader who has shown organizational savvy and flexibility in confronting and adapting to rapidly changing healthcare and Union environments. A proven ability to grow a membership base. An empathetic leader who has a demonstrated, successful record of attracting and empowering a highly talented staff and is skilled at coaching and mentoring. Has success in building and maintaining effective coalition partnerships.

Communication:
An effective communicator who has excelled in building successful relationships. An established record of fostering teamwork and consensus, effectively managing conflict, provoking creative problem-solving, and necessary risk taking, and is inclusive of diverse individual and cultural perspectives. An enthusiastic leader who has the ability to foster a positive work environment with the goal of creating a strong brand for OFNHP.

Additional Qualifications:

  • Microsoft Office Suites, including advanced Excel skills
  • Experience with Google documents
  • Familiarity with international based member databases
  • Departmental budget management
  • Experience with researching and policy writing
  • Management of projects from inception to completion with minimal oversight
  • Critical analytical skills

  • Work independently in a fast-paced environment
  • Maintain confidentiality and discretion
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Must have valid driver’s license and car in good working condition
