The Labor Liaison is responsible for helping to (1) ensure a positive, collaborative relationship between United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey (UWGPSNJ) and the Philadelphia Council AFL-CIO (the Council); (2) build strong working relationships with strategic community allies in the public and private sectors; (3) educate union members and other key community stakeholders about United Way initiatives, nonprofit partners, and the impact of United Way’s work; and (4) increase the community’s financial and in-kind support of United Way and its nonprofit partners. The Labor Liaison will also participate in other outreach programs and events to ensure greater awareness of and support for UWGPSNJ.

Successful completion of the tasks and responsibilities will result in increased collaboration between organized labor and UWGPSNJ on community-wide initiatives; stronger relationships between the union and the business community; increased knowledge of United Way partners and initiatives throughout the labor and corporate communities; and increased participation by the community in UWGPSNJ campaigns and volunteer activities. The workplan for the Labor Liaison will be developed jointly by UWGPSNJ and the Council and will be assessed quarterly according to preestablished metrics.

Due to the shared nature of this role, the Labor Liaison will report both to United Way and Council leadership. The primary work location will rotate between the offices of UWGPSNJ and the Council, as work requires.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Build, maintain, and manage relationships with union leadership and key community partners and other stakeholders.
    • Represent the Council on strategic programs serving union members (e.g., Dislocated Workers Program, PA Rapid Response Team, Youth Engagement) and programs supported by UWGPSNJ (e.g., PA 211).
    • Act as smooth and timely channel of communication between UWGPSNJ staff and the Council regarding community investments and partnerships; and identify opportunities for collaboration.
    • Help United Way and the Council network and reach new audiences and build/rebuild partnerships with private sector companies across Greater Philadelphia.
    • Prepare and deliver presentations to union members and corporate partners about United Way’s initiatives and their positive impact on the community.
  2. Support efforts to increase the participation of organized labor in United Way’s advocacy and support general relationship management (volunteerism and fundraising) with corporate partners.
    • Oversee volunteer and other advocacy activities for labor and UWGPSNJ corporate partners.
    • Increase support of and participation by union members in corporate giving campaigns as well as develop plans to secure other kinds of in-kind or financial support for UWGPSNJ initiatives and events from union and corporate stakeholders.
    • Work alongside United Way staff to support fundraising generally, speaking at events and helping develop and implement strategies for year-round stewardship of key corporate relationships.
    • Help gather and analyze information and create presentations for different audiences, as well as fulfill requests for information and support from other departments at UWGPSNJ.

BASIC JOB QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field or equivalent experience preferred.
  • A minimum of 3-5 years relevant work experience.
  • Proven ability to work in a participative and collaborative manner, and to interact well with a diverse range of people, strong customer service orientation
  • Excellent oral presentation skills
  • Fluency with major office software including Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint; experience with relational database desirable
  • Ability to work under the pressure of tight deadlines and to effectively manage, organize and prioritize projects and workload with attention to detail and strong follow-through
  • Must be able to problem-solve and be proactive, goal-driven and focused on results
  • Demonstrated ability to be flexible and function in a fast-paced environment
  • Valid driver’s license & insurance and reliable transportation required for out-of-office travel around Philadelphia and the suburbs
  • Familiarity with history and current priorities of organized labor
  • Familiarity with the local nonprofit human services community and commitment to UWGPSNJ’s mission.
