The United Mine Workers of America (UMWA) Legal Department has an opening for a Staff Attorney in its headquarters office. The UMWA relies on its legal staff to further the Union’s historic mission as a progressive force in working people’s lives. The law practice is varied, and includes a wide range of matters, including, but not limited to, enforcing and negotiating collective bargaining agreements; organizing; work preservation; safety and health; bankruptcy; internal union affairs; and general legal matters. The Legal Department is regularly involved in significant litigation in federal courts, as well as before administrative agencies, and also helps the Union with its legislative and political activities.

The office is located in the Washington, DC metro area, 19 miles south of the I-495 Beltway, in Triangle, VA.

An ideal candidate will be a self-starter with initiative who can thrive in an environment where meaningful work will be assigned from the outset. Candidates must also possess the ability to work well on a team and in collaborative environments. The position requires outstanding research and writing skills, the ability to communicate effectively, a creative approach to litigation, and a commitment to social justice.
