Assistant Executive Director

The Costume Designers Guild, IATSE Local 892 is a labor union of professional costume designers, assistant costume designers, and illustrators working in film, television, commercials, and other media. Currently, the CDG is accepting applications for the assistant executive director position. Candidates must be familiar with the IATSE Basic Agreement, IATSE Low Budget Theatrical Agreement, and IATSE AICP Agreement. So, the position will require significant previous experience in an IATSE union. The ideal applicant will have demonstrated a strong commitment to social justice and building the labor movement.


  • Significant experience in entertainment industry labor-related field, or extensive experience as a Local Union Officer, Union Organizer or Business Agent in the IATSE.
  • CDG, IATSE Local 892 member in good standing, who has significant experience working under Local 892 contracts.

Skills, Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Supporting Executive Director in all his/her/their functions.
  • Ensuring compliance with collective bargaining agreements.
  • Processing grievances.
  • Attending meetings, picket lines, seminars, and conferences.
  • Communicating with the membership.
  • Exercise sound judgment in complex situations.
  • Understand, explain and organizational policies and procedures
  • Handle extremely difficult or volatile situations/individuals effectively
  • Understand and effectively deploy principles and techniques of labor negotiations.
  • Analyze issues and develop recommendations, demonstrating organization and problem-solving skills.

Essential Functions

  • Ability to work well with a wide variety of people.
  • MS Office Suite proficiency (MS Word, Outlook, Power Point, etc.).
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Ability to assist in drafting proposals for negotiations, settlements, other employment agreements, often outside ordinary office hours
  • Exhibit and employ leadership skills to educate and motivate members
  • Conduct presentations in a variety of settings to a variety of audiences, lead training seminars, and panel discussions
  • Demonstrated ability to handle extremely difficult or volatile situations/individuals effectively, often outside ordinary business hours
  • Effectively deploy principles and techniques of labor negotiations
  • Conduct analysis of labor relations and internal union operational issues and develop written and other recommendations, demonstrating organization and problem-solving skills
  • Attend meetings and conferences with, or on behalf of, leaders of Local 892, including the Executive Director, and make effective presentations at such meetings and conferences

Competitive Salary, Health Insurance and Pension Benefits. Starting salary: $90,000.
