The Virginia Education Association (VEA) is seeking applicants for the position of Director, Communications & Public Affairs. VEA is a statewide organization of more than 40,000 teachers and school support professionals working for the betterment of public education in the Commonwealth. Position Overview
The Director of Communications & Public Affairs reports to the VEA Executive Director and oversees a staff of five professionals headquartered in Richmond. In addition to day-to-day management of all communications functions, the Director serves on the VEA management team, providing strategic counsel to the VEA Executive Director and the VEA President. The Director is ultimately responsible for the expression of VEA’s message and brand to members, potential members, and to the public.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Direct strategic communications and public relations programs for 40,000-member Association.
  • Plan and administer $2 million department and VEA public relations campaign budgets.
  • Lead branding efforts and ensure message consistency across communications platforms.
  • Engage consultants to conduct research into member, potential member, and public attitudes; manage activities to ensure this research is utilized.
  • Support VEA Strategic Focus Areas and the work of VEA departments through the application of communications strategy and tactics on such priorities as legislative and political campaigns and racial and social justice.
  • Supervise professional and administrative staff with expertise in publishing, communications, graphic design, digital media, media relations. Mentor, coach, and conduct performance management.
  • Supervise production of Association magazine, digital and web-based communications, large-scale email programs, membership recruitment materials, convention and meeting materials, special event products, and all other publications and communications products. Working with colleagues in headquarters and in the field, ensure that projects are completed on time and within budget.
  • Direct media relations and earned media activities to communicate VEA beliefs and activities through the press.
  • Assist in the development of speeches, columns, Friday Leaders Reports, and other communications from the VEA President to members and the public.
  • Provide training to VEA executive and local leaders, members, and staff.
  • Provide support and advice on communications efforts of VEA local affiliates.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Superior oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Ability be both a strong planner and a capable leader in crisis situations.
  • Experience in managing people and budgets required.
  • Experience planning and executing strategic communications plans that achieve desired outcomes.
  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, public relations, or related field is required, Master’s Degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience leading strategic communications efforts for a nonprofit, government or higher education institution, or labor union.
  • An understanding of and appreciation for the role of public education today is highly desirable.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with the association leadership and Board of Directors.
  • Valid driver’s license,
  • Occasional weekend work and travel.

Salary and Fringe Benefits
Salary is negotiable, depending upon qualifications and experience, with a hiring range of $113,000 to $130,000. VEA offers an excellent fringe benefits package including a defined benefit pension plan, a 401K plan, 17 paid holidays, 24 days of annual leave, 15 days of sick leave, a vision plan, 100% employer paid dental plan, and 95% employer paid health insurance. The employment agreement also includes a liberal benefit and leave package.
