Full-Time Organizer
Northeast Houston AFT

Based in the suburban Houston, TX area

 

Northeast Houston AFT is seeking a full-time Organizer for the suburban Houston area. This position is supervised by the Local President or appointed Direct Supervisor. Organizers perform a number of duties, including recruiting new members, identifying potential leaders and activists, and tracking data in their assigned areas. This is a joint venture between Northeast Houston AFT and the Texas AFT.

Applicants should have a working knowledge of unions and a strong commitment to the labor movement. Organizing experience is a requirement. Teachers and paraprofessionals with organizing experience are highly encouraged to apply.

This job requires often long and irregular hours, some weekend work, and may include some travel.

JOB OPENING: Full-time Organizer

SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Take direction from the Project Director or appointed Supervisor on daily and weekly activities to grow
  • AFT membership in the assigned school districts
  • Work with campus or worksite leaders to develop a plan to engage members and recruit potential members.
  • Make appointments for school visits, one-on-one visits, and other interaction with members and potential members in assigned school districts to make assessments and recruit new member activists.
  • Engage member and potential member activists around union actions and activities via virtual and in-person meetings.
  • Attend daily or weekly meetings with supervisors to discuss progress and make plans
  • Enter assessments and other data collected in a database on a weekly basis
  • Occasionally, assignment as a formula rep in other parts of the state or country as required for short periods of time

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Strong commitment to the labor movement
  • Able to work well independently as well as part of a team
  • Able to develop creative organizing plans for assigned turf and see them through
  • Some knowledge of public sector unions in non-collective bargaining situations is preferred
  • Some experience with membership recruitment in non-collective bargaining situations is preferred
  • Computer literacy required; some database experience preferred
  • Reliable transportation and a valid driver's license
