Job Description:
AFT-Wisconsin is a labor organization comprised of members in the state PK-12 school system, the Wisconsin Technical College System, numerous state agencies, and the University of Wisconsin System. AFT-Wisconsin is committed to prioritizing worker’s rights, racial and economic equity, and progressive issues. This full-time position will work directly with AFT-Wisconsin local union leaders and activists across the state to develop and implement worksite issue campaigns, community coalitions, and engagement activities. 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate organizing efforts directly with local affiliates and assist local unions with the development and implementation of internal organizing and membership building plans based on workplace issues.
  • Develop state-wide campaigns to promote progressive agenda and build membership engagement
  • Work with community partners to develop tailored member mobilization programs focused around workplace and student issues, and community engagement
  • Empower local affiliate leaders and activists to handle local union responsibilities
  • Mentor and training field organizing staff
  • One-on-one visits, site visits, and other interactions with members and potential members
  • Other duties as assigned

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with grassroots organizing experience (union experience preferred), including membership building, leadership development, and campaign development and implementation
  • Familiarity with union organizing in a non-bargaining or “right to work” context
  • Commitment to the labor movement and to AFT-Wisconsin
  • General knowledge of education and labor issues, particularly as they relate to the public sector
  • General knowledge of Wisconsin’s political process and state-specific political issues
  • Ability to work with union members across a variety of employment sectors
  • Demonstrated ability to write and speak effectively
  • Ability to listen actively and frame issues
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel, VAN/LAN
  • Willingness to work long and irregular hours
  • Must be in possession of an insured vehicle and valid driver’s license
  • Ability to travel extensively within Wisconsin to work with local unions
  • College degree preferred

Salary and Benefits:
Commensurate with the provisions of the collective bargaining agreement between AFT-Wisconsin and the Professional Staff Union, including health and dental insurance and retirement benefits.
