New Organizing Director

Based in the SF Bay Area, CA


International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers (IFPTE), Local 21 seeks a New Organizing Director who will develop and execute an external organizing strategy. The New Organizing Director will have a strong track record of winning campaigns, and a vision and desire to build power for working people. This position is for someone who is driven, self-motivated, work well on a diverse team, and has experience in new organizing, planning, and staff coaching. This person has a deep commitment to building a progressive, powerful labor movement and can work easily with staff and worker leaders.

Local 21 is a progressive, innovative, growing union of more than 10,000 professional government employees in major jurisdictions throughout Northern California.

Campaign Development

  • Supports the development and execution of a winning new organizing strategy.
  • Co-develops the overall new organizing strategy, with strategic direction from the Executive Director and the staff team.
  • Builds coherence across campaigns and programs.
  • Builds strong relationships with working people.
  • Participates actively in campaign implementation.
  • Researches and works with the Local’s research staff to identify potential new organizing targets, analyzing data, and applying other criteria in assessment.
  • Develops/assists in the development of tools for field strategy implementation as necessary.
  • Coordinates the organizing with legal, research, and communication staff.
  • Prepares timely written campaign reports and meeting summaries.

Staff Supervision

  • Responsible for high performance and results of the new organizing team.
  • Supervises the Organizers, providing support and accountability.
  • Provides ongoing constructive feedback and evaluation to team members.
  • Works with Organizers to create and meet goals in detailed work plans for themselves and the teams they supervise.
  • Manages Organizers’ success in meeting goals and deadlines.
  • Crafts and runs staff development plans for each Organizer.
  • Supports development and execution of organizing strategy.

Other Management and Leadership Responsibilities

  • Works with the Executive Director to drive forward organizational development goals and help align new organizing work overall to achieve those goals.
  • Fosters a climate of winning, empowerment, cohesion, and integration.


  • A minimum of 3 years’ experience as an organizer.
  • A minimum of 2 years’ experience as a Lead or Supervisor.
  • Experience winning concrete organizing campaigns.
  • Ability to develop a field strategy and detailed action plan; clearly outline roles for team members, colleagues, and partners; and deliver on the plan on time.
  • Excellent oral communications and presentation skills, including the ability to tailor messages and engage different audiences.
  • Proven ability to work well in teams and collaborate across departments and/or organizations.
  • Proven ability to manage in a manner that inspires motivates, develops, and maintains good working relations with diverse membership and staff.
  • Proven ability to integrate racial and gender justice.
  • Sophisticated knowledge of legal, political, economic, and industry forces that impact organizing campaigns.
  • Strategic vision and direction for short- and long-term campaigns on local, regional, state, and national issues and levels to win policy and administrative change.
  • Strategic vision and direction to connect workplace fights to social issues impacting communities.
  • Deep dedication to the leadership of directly affected people.
  • Patience and stamina.


  • Salary - $110,000 - $135,000 commensurate with experience
