Political / Community Organizer

Job Title: Political Organizer – Colorado WINS (Full-Time)
Annual Salary:  Between $54,000 – $61,000 /YR
Location: Colorado (Denver and other locations in Colorado)

Organization Overview: Be part of making organizing history in Colorado. Colorado just joined the ranks of 36 states that have collective bargaining rights for public employees. Colorado WINS is looking to build a statewide team to organize 28,000 state employees in a game-changing campaign to win new investment in public services and the workers who provide those services. We need an energetic political organizer to lead the work of engaging state employees on a continual basis into building a politically powerful statewide organization. The political organizer will help plug union members into political and ally work to hone their skills, increase their political acumen and develop their leadership abilities.

Colorado WINS is a joint affiliate of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) and the American Federation of Teachers (AFT). Our union is leading the work for all people to have unions, no matter the job that they do. Position Summary & Responsibilities: Working under the direction of the Executive Director or ED appointee, this individual will be part of a team which supports and empowers workers to build their political strength to make gains in the workplace and to address larger social/political issues in their communities. This individual will be assigned to support Colorado WINS’ campaigns.

Examples of Duties:

  • Strengthen a worker-led movement: Help implement leadership development programs, lead worker trainings, support worker-led committees and organize direct actions.
  • Build Political Power for workers: Drive state and federal electoral campaign member engagement for union-endorsed candidates and initiatives.
  • Develop and implement comprehensive state and local policy campaigns to advance worker power through politics
  • Create and drive member work with legislators and congress people in and out of regular session to achieve goals.
  • Help coordinate the election endorsement process
  • Recruit and engage members in political work to elect union/worker champions and pass pro-public sector, union and worker initiatives
  • Implement Strategic Partnerships: identify, manage and build strategic alliances to advance our campaigns and build long-term partnerships and coalitions that advance worker power based on COWINS mission and vision.
  • Closely coordinate with staff and multiple campaign teams, including organizing, communications, and research.
  • May serve as political lead for other organizers or members.

Minimum Qualifications & Skills: Graduation from an accredited college or university in relevant field with at least three (3) to six (6) years of related work experience or equivalent experience in labor and community organizing that would provide for the following knowledge of, skills and abilities:

  • Proven commitment to social and economic justice and improving the lives of working people.
  • Experience working on campaigns with a labor union, public policy, or non-profit organization.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work in a fast-paced and diverse team environment.
  • Ability to drive work independently, manage assignments, stay organized and meet tight deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to clearly convey information and ideas both verbally and in writing across audiences.
  • Computer proficiency in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, social media platforms and teleconferencing platforms.

Additional Requirements:

  • Ability to travel in Colorado, ability to work extended and irregular hours, and work remotely, if needed
  • Valid drivers’ license, use of a car for work, and specified automobile insurance coverage are mandatory

Salary & Benefits:

  • Salary is competitive and negotiable based on experience. (Based on Staff Union Contract)
