Organizing Director

SEIU Local 888 seeks an Organizing Director with strong experience uniting workers in public service, not-for-profit and/or higher education campaigns to build economic and political power for working families and to win the good jobs our communities need.

The Organizing Director must be prepared to:

  • Conceptualize and build Local 888's organizing program and expand the union's organizing capacity.
  • Manage the local organizing budget and ensure that members' resources are used effectively;
  • Develop and implement both long-term strategic organizing plans and annual organizing plans that include:
  • targeting that promotes the growth of members' bargaining power
  • campaign development and execution
  • development of organizing campaign models and strategies that win for members
  • staff recruitment, hiring, training and development
  • development of members as organizers;
  • Work closely with the field, communications, research and political departments at the local and SEIU headquarters to support organizing;
  • Provide organizing training to local leaders, members and staff;
  • Direct and manage organizing department staff;
  • Work with the national SEIU Organizing Department to promote the organizing goals of the local and SEIU;
  • Provide vision and leadership to members, leaders and local staff and on the importance of organizing.

The Organizing Director should have at least five years of experience; preferably running campaigns in both private and public sectors and three years supervisory experience. Candidates should have demonstrated experience with NLRB and state election laws and hopefully some experience with non-traditional routes to recognition and collective bargaining. Must have an ability to make organizing plans and work effectively with Local 888 leaders and department heads. Applicants should have a demonstrated commitment to social justice and be dedicated to empowering workers and building the labor movement. Applicants must be willing and able to work nights, weekends and irregular hours as required.

Computer literacy, research and database proficiency and Spanish language skills are desirable.

The position involves working throughout the state of Massachusetts but may include out of state travel assignments. A car and valid driver's license are required.

Compensation: Salary commensurate with experience. Full benefit package including 100% employer-paid insurance (health care, STD/LTD, dental/vision), employer-paid pension, 401K, sick, personal, vacation time and holidays.
