Staff Representative / Mobilizer

The Independent Association of Publishers’ Employees (IAPE) TNG-CWA Local 1096 is seeking a New York-based Staff Representative/Mobilizer to support the local’s campaign for a new collective bargaining agreement, as well as other initiatives throughout the year.

The staff rep/mobilizer will report to both the President and the Executive Director, and will work daily with the Local Board of Directors, bargaining committee, stewards and the membership across the U.S. and Canada to help build out a structure benchmarked by member engagement. Work is currently remote, but once the pandemic ends, some travel will be required. This permanent, full-time position offers a competitive salary and great benefits.

IAPE is a labor union representing approximately 1,400 members, including journalists at The Wall Street Journal and Barron’s. It is a local of The NewsGuild-Communications Workers of America.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work with local leadership to develop a strategic mobilization plan that will include actions to be taken at individual locations and across membership
  • Build and train network of regional mobilizing coordinators and location mobilizers envisioning a 10:1 or 12:1 ratio
  • Identify, train and develop member leaders and strong internal committees
  • Assisting members to map and chart workplaces, build leadership networks and conduct structure tests, both for internal and external organizing campaigns
  • Help plan and coordinate other regular events in support of the collective bargaining campaign
  • Assist in executing the program of the Union to improve the lives of workers
  • Visit worksites, educate members, build participation in union activities
  • Identify workplace issues and create programs to address them
  • Where appropriate, recommending and assisting with grievances, classification, labor/management issues and filing ULPs
  • Regularly coordinating with local and national NewsGuild staff to set goals, track progress and brainstorm through challenges


  • Must have familiarity with labor law and experience with private-sector contract campaigns
  • Familiarity with union grievance procedures
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • 1-3 years labor organizing experience required; additional experience working in media sector and understanding of journalism a strong plus
  • A strong commitment to building a diverse and member-driven union
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities; must be an effective communicator with excellent interpersonal and writing skills
  • Ability to work irregular hours, long evenings and occasional weekends

Salary Range: $75,000 – $85,000 with benefits including cell phone reimbursement, 401(k) contribution & match and medical, vision and dental coverage.
